Car and Driver just published their instrument test of the new BMW M2. BMW claims the M2 with a manual transmission will run to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, or a half-second quicker than the last M235i manual. In the C&D testing, the manual M2 ran the 60 sprint in 4.2 seconds. For reference, C&D also tested a manual M4 which ran to 60 in 4.1 seconds, while the dual-clutch sprinted in 3.7 seconds.

From standing to the quarter mile, the BMW M2 needed 12.7 sec with a top speed of 113 mph. On the skidpad, the M2 registered 0.99 g. With the M4 braking system, the M2 stops from 70 mph to standstill over 159 feet.

The weight of the U.S.-spec’d M2s has been debated over and over by potential customers and BMW fans. BMW claims the manual M2 weighs 3450 pounds, while the C&D scales showed a 3415-pound number; the dual-clutch auto is said to add 55 pounds. The car tested by the U.S. magazine had the manual seats and not the standard ones which will be available to U.S. customers.

Under the hood, the M2 uses the tuned up and modified N55 turbocharged 3.0-liter which delivers most of its power from 2000 rpm to the 7000-rpm redline. An overboost feature bumps the torque peak from 343 lb-ft to 369, and the torque curve draws a wide plateau from 1450 to 4750 rpm.

The M2 goes on sale in April with an MSRP of $52,695, including Destination and Handling charges.

I can't remember the last time an M car received such a huge praise from the press. And this taking into account M has been on a roll with the X5 and X6 M and the M4.

Let's hope this keeps getting better with the F90 M5.

"On a roll" with the X5 and X6 M?! :eusa_thin

And the M4 has hardly been a unanimous success from the reviewers point of view.

I have just one questions, will there be a M2 Cabriolet?

Bad news for you , Marcus

CarAdvice has just been at the launch of the all-new BMW M2 Coupe, where the chief engineer of the model, Frank Isenberg, made it clear that a drop-top model wasn’t on the cards.

“We’ve got such a nice M235i Convertible. And convertibles are not for racetracks, they’re for cruising,” Isenberg said.

There will not be an M2 Convertible,” he said. “We need to keep it as purist as we did with the 1 Series M Coupe.”

I remember when the E92 M3 came out, there were some critizisms as well. It has a V8, the 335i is funnier to drive... But, as with that car, I believe the general opinion with the M4 when the replacement time comes will be that is has been a fantastic car and the segment leader.

First German instrumented Test in the new Auto Zeitung:

Weight: 1520 kg
0-100 kph: 4,2 s
0-200 kph: 14,9 s
Braking (c/w): 34,5 / 33,6 m
Fuel Consumption: 12,8 L/100 km

Laptime Hockenheim Short: 1.13,2 min

Verdict: 1,0 (best possible rating)

"A great engine and a racing-like set-up. Furthermore, the M2 is a lot of fun to drive, also in everyday situations."

The testcar was equipped with DCT.
I don't know how exactly they measure the weight, but I don't think that they measured the weight for the M2 in this particular test, because it is exactly the same as BMW's claim for a M2 DCT and this is just a short test.

Yesterday, German magazine Auto Zeitung reported on the official time of the new BMW M2 on the Hockenheim short track. Weighing 1520 kilograms, the DCT-equipped M2 ran the standard sprint in 4.2 seconds, while the 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h), the “baby-M” needed only 14.9 seconds. But more impressive was the Hockenheim lap – 1:13.2 minutes. The figure is even more impressive when compared with the limited edition BMW E90 M3 CRT which ran the same circuit in 1:13.6 minutes.

Today, Sport Auto publishes an even better lap time – 1:12.5 minutes. The car weighed 1752 kilograms with no driver. In comparison, the M4 Coupe with a manual transmission lapped the same track in 1:12.8 minutes. The M4 weighed 1615 kg.

The original “baby-M” – the 1 Series M Coupe – had a lap time of 1:14.1 with a weight of 1513 kg. The M235i reported a lap of 1:15.4 minutes with a weight of 1542 kg.

Quicker than the M2 was the Porsche Cayman GT4 with a lap time of 1:10.1 min, while behind the M2 we find cars like the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, Audi RS3 and Ford Mustang GT.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
