Fortwo/Forfour 2014 Smart ForTwo prototype shows itself

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

From the looks of these spy shots, Daimler is hard at work on the 2014 Smart ForTwo, giving us our first look next generation of this micro car. With the partnership between Renault and Daimler finally coming to fruition, the Smart will likely share a platform with the Renault Twingo, and it will come in gasoline, diesel and electric variants.

In terms of styling, the test mule doesn't reveal much, but expect the new ForTwo to utilize some of the design cues introduced on recent concept vehicles like the 2011 ForVision Concept and the 2012 For-Us Concept. One thing we can see with this prototype is that the car appears to have gotten a little bigger with boxier proportions closer to the Scion iQ. Thanks to a bolted-on scoop on the rear part of the car's roof, we can tell that the 2014 ForTwo will continue to have its engine mounted in the rear.

For a release date, the production version of the new ForTwo appears to be heading to the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but we wouldn't be surprised to see another ForTwo-teasing Smart concept later this year.

I like the ForTwo. I find it brilliant! I would love to own one, if I had the luxury to have a 2door everyday car. But the 5 door configuration is making my life much easier...

I'm very curious to see how this will turn out :)

This car needs a total revamp. More room, new engine, new transmission, better seats, more and better everything. The current car is a disgrace.

SPY: Early test mules for the 2015 smart fortwo and forfour spotted in Germany

You would be tempted to say this is a Renault Twingo mule for a testing a future model of the constructor, but you couldn't be wronger than that. In fact, these are the very first spy shots that depict the next generation of the smart fortwo and forfour, both planned to be released during the course of 2014. The 4-seater has more potential nowadays and thus returns in the portfolio of the company, as CEO Dr. Annette Winkler confirmed recently. The development of the vehicles is still in a very early phase, so the final design is yet to be approved and this is the main argument of Daimler engineers for using an lightly camouflaged "outer shell" from its French partner to protect the new underpinnings.

The strategic partnership the two carmakers agreed upon and officially signed in April 2012 aims to reduce overall production costs through co-developing of new engines, new technologies, new cars and sharing of hidden components. Both the future fortwo and the forfour models will use a brand new chassis with real-wheel-drive traction (to also underpin the third generation Twingo, due in 2014, and a new mini-sized Nissan as well) to free the front axle of additional weight and improve agility. By principle, the newly developed engines, running on diesel or gasoline, will have a 3-cylinder architecture, a total displacement of 1.0 litre and below and be programmed to offer a comfortable and efficient ride, with very low CO2 emissions and unbeatable fuel economy numbers. More sophisticated assistance systems, a lighter construction and an unprecedented array of safety measures are also slated to debut in the forthcoming generations of the smart fortwo and forfour. Electric drive shall also be available right after the models arrive on the market.

The design will be inspired by the latest concepts smart has brought in the last years. Most probably, the fortwo coupe version will resemble the styling of the forvision concept, while the fortwo cabrio variant will follow the trail of the forspeED prototype. The forfour will too feature smart's new styling philosophy and combine several elements from the for-us showcar as well, besides the ones indicated previously. Thanks a longer wheelbase for the fortwo, there will be plenty of room inside 2-seater, more than in the current model. Apart from that, the interiors will have a premium touch thanks to the upscale materials that will be used and the general assembly quality well-known from Mercedes-Benz.

The new smart forfour will be revealed during summer 2014, while its smaller brother will arrive some months later, towards the end of the year. New additions to the lineup are also possible in 2015 and 2016, including a door-less Crossblade model and a leisure crossover. The entry price tag for the two new smart cars will gravitate around the 15,000 euros value, with extra optionals raising the challenge.

Note: The standard Renault Twingo mule is used to test the smart forfour, while the short wheelbase mule is used to disguise the smart fortwo.

ForTwo+2 planned
A mule of the next-gen Smart ForTwo has been spied recently by our photographers.

The 2014 ForTwo will retain its RWD layout but will share its platform with the 2014 Renault Twingo. No news right now about engine lineup but will probably include a 64 hp (48 kW) two-cylinder gasoline unit and an electric powertrain generating 87 hp (65 kW). The styling is expected to include bigger headlights, a perforated front grille and a Tridion Safety cell, while the interior cabin should boast a removable navigation system0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp.

Smart also plans on launching the ForTwo+2 which will ride on the same platform but feature an elongated wheelbase and rear doors. Its design will be similar to the regular model and could be offered with a more powerful 3-cylinder turbocharged0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp gasoline engine producing 84 hp (63 kW) and 104 hp (77 kW).

Towards the end of 2015, Smart plans on launching a Nissan Juke-based crossover0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webpwith several gasoline and diesel engines making up to 148 hp (110 kW).

The production of the smart fortwo cdi with 54 hp in the series 451 will stop in September 2013 writes jesmb.de. This means production would end just six months before the launch of the new smart fortwo in March of 2014. The new smart fortwo will be available in March 2014 only with turbo charged gasoline engines including start-stop technology. Dual clutch transmissions will be optional. In June 2014 the new smart fortwo electric drive follows, presumably with the currently known electric drive powertrain.

The reason that no CDI diesel will be offered in the new fortwo is due to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The current engine can no longer be converted to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The use of the optional BlueTEC technology using AdBlue urea injection in the smart is way too expensive. A new development which meets the Euro 6 without BlueTEC, such as the new A 220 CDI is probably not cost effective because of the small numbers.

This may thus be the last chance for the many smart fortwo cdi fans to load up with a new smart fortwo cdi.

2016 Smart Fortwo Gets Growth Spurt

The redesigned two-passenger 2016 smart fortwo will grow in size when the model hits U.S. streets in two years. The redesigned fortwo "is about 3 to 4 inches wider and maybe 1 or 2 inches longer" than the 2013 model, Webster said.

it's nice to see that Daimler hasn't given up on SMART just yet. But with BMW coming out swinging into this market with the i car I think MB really needs to give it their all...

The new smart fortwo will keep the same length: 2.69 m.

Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez says the Toyota iQ may be axed. That's really the only competitor which comes close to the shortness of the smart fortwo. smart may want to reevaluate if the fortwo should continue?

smart fortwo ............. 2.50 m .... C450, 1. generation, 1998 - 2007
smart fortwo ............. 2.69 m .... C451, 2. generation, 2007 -
smart fortwo ............. 2.69 m .... C453, 3. generation, in development
Toyota iQ ................. 2.985 m
Scion iQ ................... 3.051 m
Aston Martin Cygnet ... 3.078 m

I think it's already been axed and given that Merc and Aston have entered a partnership. We could see Mercedes donating a few Smart fortwo's to be rebadged as Aston's to help them lower the average CO2 of their fleet.

It doesn't look bad. It's OK. They should offer one for free for the owners of super expensive and thirsty MBs.
