WASHINGTON — In a small but significant action, Mercedes-Benz is recalling 41 copies of the 2011 E-Class because a part could fly out of the engine compartment during servicing, with the potential to injure bystanders, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Insufficient adhesive between the vibration damper and its inner mass damper ring could cause a sudden separation of the inner mass damper ring from the vibration damper," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "While working in the engine compartment during engine operation, the damper ring could strike and injure the person repairing the vehicle or a bystander."
Mercedes-Benz told Inside Line on Wednesday that it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the recall.
Mercedes-Benz dealers will inspect and replace parts as necessary, said the automaker. The recall is expected to begin sometime this month. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.
