Hmmm, barring the slightly disproportionate wing dimensions, on the whole I think these 2009 F1 cars look a lot prettier than last year's sci-fi disasters...

Well the mclaren is the best looking by far
Hope hammilton can put down number two this year..
Good luck macca and hammilton.

Technical analysis: McLaren MP4-24

McLaren have revealed their car for the 2009 world championship: the MP4/24 not only has to meet the new regulations, but also the standard its title-winning predecessor set.

After over 18 months of development, the team have gone back to review every element of the new package to ensure the grip from slick tyres and reduced aerodynamics are maximised. As a result, the McLaren appears to be more developed than its peers and exploits some different concepts in its aerodynamics.

Starting with an all-new monocoque the car sports a highly-raised front chassis section, with a rounded drooping nose at its tip. The nose is long and its underside features a scalloped shape, akin to Renault's R28, which should work to reduce pressure and increase downforce under the nose cone.

Already debuted in testing, the front wing is a more complex affair than seen elsewhere so far, with a two-element flap. Interestingly, only the upper element of the flap moves as allowed under the adjustable front wing rule for 2009: this is controlled by a switch on the steering wheel.

Only a simple bargeboard was fitted to the car for the launch, while the front splitter features a clever T-shaped fence to recoup some of the losses from not having more bodywork in this area.

McLaren MP4-24But it's the sidepods that are the biggest divergence from designs seen so far. McLaren have chosen the keep the sidepods tall and slim: this maximises the space between the rear wheels and, in order to allow sufficient cooling area, the exit to the bottle zone curves outwards at floor level. The exhaust outlets are a distinctive feature, being placed high and far back.

At this stage the removeable panels do not feature any hot air outlets, but the lack of any other exits suggests this might change when the car starts testing in warmer climes. Aiding the airflow out of the back of the sidepod and improving flow over the diffuser the gearbox fairing converges into a sharp "V" shape at the rear of the car.

The upper bodywork echoes the MP4-23, with the complex undercut roll structure and humped tail fin. Again, the rear wing features some concepts from its predecessor, with the endplates merging into the flap and three slots to reduce drag, which will be critical now that the wing is narrower and steeper.

McLaren MP4-24Having made huge improvements to its engine through 2008, the car carries the same power unit revised to meet the reduction in revs and extended life. The engine also connects the KERS motor/generator to the carbon gearbox, the motor unit sitting within the niche in the back of the monocoque where the oil tank usually sits. This has required the resiting of the oil tank.

KERS also needs the car to carry a power control unit and batteries to control and store the power from the motor generator. These will be sited within the sidepods: the left hand one features an extra inlet to cool them.

As McLaren are so advanced with their 2009 project, the launch car was the second chassis to be built up, as the first chassis is already in Portugal, ready for its shakedown with Pedro de la Rosa tomorrow.

McLaren will only make five chassis, compared to the usual six, this year due to the limitations in track testing.

It's crazy how different the cars look this year and that's not only because of the front and rear wings (reminiscing when Mclaren changed from the MP4-17B to MP4-18/19).
What do you guys think about this coming season. I think the entire field will run into reliability problems...electrical fires, engine failures, aero parts falling off, and tire punctures will probably be the norm next season. :D

I must admit, the mclared does look quite nice, of course, not that retarted little wing on the back though. Either way, the first race is going to be interesting cnosidering all the new changes.

First teaser of the monster.:D

I have to say that the new 2009 spec cars have grown on me and I'm on the verge of calling them beautiful. The absence of exaggerated aero gimmicks make them look more streamlined, pure and prettier. :usa7uh:

Cool teaser by BTW, hope their car looks better than the prototype we saw a few weeks back.

Launch version F60 - MP4-24 comparison
  • A The nose of the F60 is long, pointy and flat...
  • 1 ...that of the MP4-24 is shorter, rounder and less slender.
  • B The initial front wing designs are very different also, with Ferrari having little cascade wing elements connected to the endplates and there's a small vertical fin on the outside of the endplates.
  • 2 McLaren's planes have a very round and wavely shaped, the endplates have been kept very simple though.
  • C The body of both cars in the between the frontwheels is far from the ground and there are two diagonally placed fins to guide the air towards the sidepods on the F60...
  • 3 ...something the MP4-24 does without.
  • D Ferrari has a rather sophisticated mirror design: they're attached to a long vertical element which in turn is connected to the floor.
  • 4 McLaren has opted for a simple solution putting the mirrors on the side of the cockpit.
  • E The sidepods of both cars are very dissimilar too. The're a lot of difference in height in Ferrari's sidepods. The aire inlets are rather big and have a simple design.
  • 5 McLaren's sidepods look robust all the way to the back. The inlets are remarkably small and have a slick design.
  • F The exhaust pipes of the F60 stick out of the bodywork a long way whereas...
  • 6 ...those of the MP4-24 can't be seen at all. There's just a small hole the hot gasses come out of.
  • G As far as the rearwings are concerned: Ferrari has opted for endplates that are wider and have a greater surface in order to create stability in corners.
  • 7 McLaren has chosen a different design which is characterised by the long slits and the big triangular cut next to them.

Beauty she ain't :t-hands:

There's one funny thing I've noticed with all the F1 car launches. Every single press picture for each F1 car, has the tires rotated such that the Bridgestone logo is at the top and readable, on front wheels and back. Must be some sort of requirement.
