2007 S-class scores mixed in JD Power survey: Great appeal but quality issues remain

You will not read about this yet in the media but the results are in for the first batch of 2007 S class cars in terms of initial quality. Overall figures are a little below average, but not a complete disaster, unlike the previous generation.

The url is:

http://www.jdpower.com/autos/compare.asp

This is a Flash based page, so can't copy and paste, but here are the numbers:

Criteria Rating (out of 5 stars)
------- ---------------------
Overall Quality - Manufacturing 3 stars
Mechanical Quality - Manufacturing 3 stars
Body & Interior Quality - Manufacturing 4 stars
Feature & Accessory Quality - Manufacturing 2.5 stars
Overall Quality - Design 3 stars
Mechanical Quality - Design 4.5 stars
Body & Interior Quality - Design 2.5 stars
Feature & Accessory Quality - Design 2.5 stars
Overall Appeal 4.5 stars
Performance 4.5 stars
Style 4.5 stars
Features & Instrument Panel 4.5 stars
Comfort 5 stars

Still niggling bugs but overall owners like their cars and could not be happier with comfort levels.

Wow, the Russian mafia bosses and the dictators of African countries will be very disappointed with the result.;) :D

Re: 2007 S-class scores only average in JD Power survey

OK, no hate mail but any idea where they got those ratings from? As in customer survey/independent testing or what?

I test drove an S500 with medium options and the quality was just superior to BMW, Audi etc. My cousin has a fully loaded 750Li and he too agreed that comfort/quality levels were better in the S. Maybe because they must've tested the lower end leather or cloth?

I agree entirely with you GrimReaper ...I don't know what they were comparing the S class to ..but most of us agree that the W221 is superior to the A8 and 7er overall. As far as build-quality goes, Bentley FS, Maybach, and Roll-Royce are superior ...but they cost a lot more too.

Re: 2007 S-class scores only average in JD Power survey

In these 5 areas:

Overall Quality - Manufacturing 3 stars
Mechanical Quality - Manufacturing 3 stars
Feature & Accessory Quality - Manufacturing 2.5 stars
Body & Interior Quality - Design 2.5 stars
Feature & Accessory Quality - Design 2.5 stars

I just don't see what how people could rate this car so low. It doesn't make sense.

If MB can't change their standing within the world of JDP with the new S-Class they don't stand a chance of ever getting to the top in these surveys.

I'll be interested to see what C.R. says, usually J.D.P. ratings and C.R. ratings are quite similar.

Re: 2007 S-class scores only average in JD Power survey

Since some of you mentioned A8 and 7 series lets see the JD ratings:

Sorry i couldn't resist.:D

Thanks for fixing that Yannis.

Well, I am disappointed by this result ..I have to be honest ...the world has gone crazy ...who would ever have believed 20 years ago, the day would come when VAG beat MBAG in quality surveys of their top models.

it's not bad, it's "ok". To add the A8 has been around for about three years now, I doubt in it's first year it did any better than the W221 is doing now, if anything at all, in pretty much every area the S-class is just a point or so out of touch with the A8. That will change I'm sure.

Two years ago Audi A8 was the best in class in quality ratings of Consumer Reports beating both 7 series and old S class. So although the S class had 5-6 years in production it was still worse than a 2 year old A8. So what you are saying has some logic but it's not always true.

That is what I don't like about CR. Their roadtest of the S-Class had them saying that it was like the best car they'd ever tested, beating all the others, but yet they of course couldn't recommend it because of its reliability.

I been in the new S65 and sorry to break it for you but S8 is superior to S65 interior wise.

Anyway, its what I expected from a new car. Child sikness, give it a 1 year or two and S-class will do better.
