It sounds sad to see a wonderful car like this left standing by their owner for 15 years but it is a wonderful feeling to see this beautiful car been made to look almost new again.

The last of the "long hooded, stacked headlamp, fancy larger taillamp, more chrome trim" Fintails. There was no longer room for it in the M-B model catalogue as the far more modern W108 became increasingly dominant.

The materials been used look so expensive and thick. Real wood and real metallic chrome parts and total solidity.

Mercedes need to bring this kind of craftsmanship back to it's S class models.

I agree, but I just don't think it's feasible if you're going to keep the S_Class somewhat affordable for the working rich. That level of quality would put it in the Flying Spur to Ghost range I would think?

Yep. A bespoke Maybach SUV would be the move IMO. I don't know about another sedan. Rolls Royce is really hard to beat or even match in that space.

I agree.
For travel, I always prefer the SUV it’s more spacious.

The prices of S-classes are racing upwards and the Chinese competition is moving in fast with lower priced models that are nearly as well built. If Mercedes could once again bring in some "Engineered like no other car in the world" feel to its materials and design then the S-class will be a star again.

The Maybach needs to be more exclusive with finer materials to put it in the Bentley league and not just a longer S-class.

But here's the thing, if they don't use the S as a base, you're talking about a bespoke car. If they use the S it will always be a compromise as to how much differentiation they an provide. It's the same question. I think the best compromise would be to use the S-Class platform, but with a bespoke body and interior, not a totally new car from the wheels up.

Agree. They don't need a different platform. The MRA2 platform is more than well sorted out enough for Maybach. They just need to graft on bespoke bodywork and interior with full manufaktur suite customisation as standard, and paint-to-sample.

Call it the Maybach 600 Grosser. The original head of state mobile

This 1965 W111 220SE is absolutely stunning. Such a beautiful saloon that makes the latest Mercedes models appear somewhat lackluster and cheap.

About 58 years ago, when the W111/112 "Fintails" were finally retired, the Mercedes-Benz brand enjoyed a nearly unassailable reputation of "exceptionalism". Progressively higher volumes, increasingly larger assortment of models in various categories, the introduction of price rather than "to a standard" focused engineering and quality and increasing, highly competent competition have long since turned M-B into little more than "another purveyor among several of expensive automobiles". Most certainly, a loyal, often genuinely affluent fanbase remains. But the "obvious, rational choice" decision has evaporated in the eyes of many more discerning consumers.

The problem of Mercedes Benz is, that they started to care what the competition does.

They need more Mia san Mia. We are what we are.

This very famous Football (Soccer) Club usually don’t care what other team do or say.

They’re full of themselves, and they want to play the best game and to win all of them.

That’s what Mercedes Benz needs.

To produce the best cars whatever it takes, and after they have the finished product, they can almost charge whatever they want, because nobody can compete with them.

This was Mercedes Benz until the late 80s or mid 90s.

The G is currently the only car with this behavior. The W140 was one as well.
