Spied! All-New Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Limo

I think this time under Dieter Zetsche they will do more research what the market wants and then be more critical and careful as to what they will do to resurrect the Maybach brand on a more successful level. The emphasis on top level luxury will be the defining factor for Maybach brand. Hoping this will not be done in a tacky way and their will be alot of styling distance with this and conventional Mercedes models

We should manage expectations for what level of differentiation Maybach vehicles will have to regular models. It will be analogous to the transformations that AMG versions undergo from their regular ones. I don't believe the Maybach will have a GT/SLS equivalent bespoke Maybach version, as Maybach is not formerly independent unit like AMG was (and does not have its own structure, CEO etc).

From Autocar:

1120 Interesting developments on the Mercedes stand, where Andrew Frankel has been talking to the brand's boss Dieter Zetsche. He says: "Zetsche has come the closest yet to saying that Maybach is coming back, not as a single model but an entire sub-brand.

"When I suggested to him that Mercedes-Maybach could be the company's luxury arm in the same way as Mercedes-AMG is now its sporting arm he said, 'we will be making an announcement in due course but your thinking is going in the right direction.'"

Mercedes S600 Pullmann spied undergoing testing in Germany

S Pullman 1.webp

Could be introduced sometime next year
The Mercedes S600 Pullmann has been spied undergoing testing near the company's headquarters in Germany.

Looking absolutely massive, the S600 Pullmann follows in the footsteps of thestandard model but has been stretched to measure approximately 6.4 meters (252 inches) long.

The additional length will create a roomy and luxurious interior which is expected to feature a 2+2+2 seating arrangement with four rear seats facing each other. The rear passenger compartment is also expected to be separated from driver's compartment by a retractable partition.

Power will likely be provided by a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine that develops 530 PS (390 kW) and 830 Nm (612 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the standard model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds but the Pullmann will likely be slower due to its additional weight.

Mercedes has been relatively tight-lipped about the model but it is expected to be introduced sometime next year and cost approximately €920,000 ($1,164,936). There should also be an armored variant that costs a few hundred thousand dollars more.

I don't see who might have interest on this model other than limo companies, wealthy who currently use stretched town cars for driven transportation or govermnent and conglomerates for executive transportation. To car fans, this model has no relevance in my opinion. For me it may as well be a s-class based hearse for all i care.

I was at BMW UK recently an in a neighbouring city they had a (wrapped) bright pink Maybach 62 as a party limo.

Can't understand why Mercedes is going down this road.

What happened to the Ocean Drive Concept?

At this end of the market, it is a given that Mercedes will build technically the best car in the world, however, that is not what will sell the product for most potential buyers. Already the S65 is a more desirable prospect that a stretched and re-badged S600 ....who cares if the Maybach variant will offer more wood options?

If they want a Rolls beater then they need to focus on a new interpretation of high-end luxury; a stretched S-class will find some buyers but I'm not sure this is what the market is desperately calling for. It's got to be more than custom-embroidery on the seats and a more expensive entertainment system. The main focus must be on aesthetics: ie. the emotional and sensual aspects of the product.

In many ways Mercedes still believes that their products are successful because of the engineering quality ......that is only partially true: most buyers know next-to-nothing about engineering .....but they do appreciate the history and culture of the Mercedes-Benz brand and its reputation for outstanding engineering.

In this narcissistic Western culture where the products we choose to consume have become an extension of our persona (how we like others to view us ....and how we like to imagine ourselves to be) there is a great deal of opportunity at the high-end of the market to create much more expressive and extraordinary products.

With thousands of new millionaires (new wealth tends to be less burdened with self-conscious social-conformity) in Asia looking for ways to spend their money, I suggest Mercedes looks to the East (China) for inspiration (maybe even establishing a design office there) ....there are some surprisingly innovative ideas coming out of China.

SDNR, you are right to an extend that buyers of Mercedes consider it heritage, reputation and engineering. But when we look why they consider those aspects result in the update widely accepted uncontroversial design, latest tech, engineering marvel of their era. I too admit that at present any luxury car maker has to consider the East, especially China while crafting their machines; but for your knowledge Mercedes have already established a R & D center in China their first design concept is already out. Ahh, thanks for that hannaz (I was unaware of that)

I certainly agree that Mercedes' formula for its success has served it well in the past .....but it must be acknowledged that Mercedes has not done well with the "Premium luxury" segment.

The S class is undeniably the greatest bourgeois status symbol in the automotive world; it is the preeminent symbol of financial success and unpretentious good taste. With sales of 100,000 in a year, the S-class is a major success in the mass-luxury segment .......but the Premium luxury segment is a very different world. Whereas the S-class is fully grounded in reality, brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce are more about illusion and fantasy. Fantasy is the most important aspect of the Premium luxury segment - it is largely smoke and mirrors.

Take a look at how Bugatti have marketed their products ....the present-day technology and the brand's grand history are treated equally with great romance and importance.

It may have occurred to Mercedes that they can't out-Rolls the Rolls. They have chosen to compete where they feel competent, and expand the S according to the size Of its britches. Designing and engineering a whole model line, the Phantom competitor takes money that may not be justified in the business sense.
