Mercedes-AMG GT4 reportedly set for 2018 launch to rival the Porsche Panamera
To have a very low roofline
A new report states Mercedes-AMG will launch a GT4 model in 2018 to compete head to head with the second generation Porsche Panamera.

Rather than looking like a four-door, stretched version of the AMG GT, this new model will have a significantly different design with an "amazingly low roofline" and bespoke doors, quarter panels and bumpers. It's also getting unique lighting clusters and a practical tailgate while the underpinnings are set to be borrowed from the next-gen CLS so it will be very much related to next year's E-Class.

The report goes on to specify Mercedes-AMG will offer three trim packages known as AMG, AMG S and AMG Sport while the engine lineup will include an inline-six 2.9-liter turbodiesel with around 300 bhp (223 kW) and 400 bhp (298 kW), an electrified six-cylinder turbo with 455 bhp (339 kW) and a couple of V8s pushing out 557 bhp (415 kW) and 585 bhp (436 kW).

If all goes according to plan, the Mercedes-AMG GT will hit dealerships late 2018 / early 2019.

AMG plotting four-seat GT?

Mercedes hot-shop's most potent sports car could spawn a four-seat super tourer

It's no secret Mercedes-AMG is planning a convertible version of its new GT super-coupe, but would Mercedes-Benz ever entertain the idea of building a four-seat version to rival the Ferrari FF?

Judging by comments from Mercedes-Benz R&D boss, Prof Dr Thomas Weber, yes it would.

Benz' vehicle development supremo wouldn’t rule out the idea of further AMG GT derivatives, hinting that it could offer more than just the obligatory two-door coupe – the $295K supercar just launched in Australia at the legendary Mount Panorama – and the expected convertible version.

Asked if a four-seat version was a possibility, Weber told a select group of Australian journalists: "Why not, huh?"

"We are always looking are there opportunities there. The success of the GT is huge and now let's see what the future will bring."

Despite its near-$300K pricetag, the Porsche 911-rivalling AMG GT S Coupe is already a sell-out success in Australia. If you went into a dealership today and aren't on a first-name basis with the principal, you'll be lucky to get one before 2017.

Understandably the decision-makers at Mercedes-Benz and AMG in Germany are looking at ways to build on the curvaceous supercar's popularity, and far from pouring cold water on expanding the AMG GT range beyond two-door models, Weber was ebullient.

"Technically, everything is possible," he said when asked if the AMG GT's bespoke platform could be adapted to incorporate a four-seat version.

"The [chassis] module side [is] as flexible as possible," he observed. "Then with a new set-up on the engineering side, more digital, we are faster [to develop new models and] we can reduce cost.

"It's now easier for us to go for variants," said Mercedes-Benz R&D boss.

Whether the Mercedes-Benz board decides to push ahead with a niche four-seater GT supercar remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: AMG has a bold new mandate to push the envelope of its latest brand flagship.

Exclusive: Mercedes-AMG will not use 4Matic anymore

Normally, we would probably tell you to take the following with a pinch of salt, but this time, it won't be necessary. Someone at Mercedes-AMG is a not a fan of 4Matic, but not in the way you might think.

Most of you have probably noticed that thanks to a change in nomenclature that started back in 2014, with the Mercedes-AMG GT, all current AMG models have lost the “Benz” in their full name.

Stuttgart now wants a clear differentiation between its different sub-brands, meaning that nowadays a Mercedes-Benz should be seen as a different breed compared to a Mercedes-Maybach and/or a Mercedes-AMG.

To complete the transition, Mercedes-AMG's head honchos want to lose the 4Matic moniker as well. In a way, it kind of makes sense, because technically speaking every AWD AMG model has a differently tuned all-wheel-drive system compared to a regular Mercedes-Benz 4Matic.

The E-, CLS- and S-Class models from AMG have a power distribution ratio of 33 to 67 percent between the front and rear axles to keep some of that tail-happiness found in the regular RWD versions, but with much-improved traction.

E-, CLS- and S-Class models badged as Mercedes-Benz have a distribution ratio of 45 to 55 percent between the front and rear axles, so the handling derived from it is entirely different.

Currently, the 4Matic name change for AWD AMG models is still being debated, but we can exclusively tell you that the marketing guys have narrowed the new moniker down to five options.

This means that starting as early as 2017, Mercedes-AMG models that come with all-wheel-drive will no longer be christened 4Matic, but either 4Dynamic, 4Action, 4Grip, Active4 or 4Power – obviously in all caps.

Don't take our word for it, but it seems that “4Dynamic” has the best chances of getting through, even though nothing has been decided at the time of this writing. What do you think about this change, is it maybe too late to start differentiating between a well-known nameplate like 4Matic and bring something else to the table or should AMG just name its models the same as before?

yep, the upcoming E63 will get the new "4Matic", that allows to drift and will performe as a RWD car with all the benefits of an AWD system :)

Interesting that they making changes to all their badging, 4Dynamic sounds good, better than boring 4matic.

4Dynamic does sound good, do it. May as well change out 4Matic too.

Since we're changing shite up, can we get the Parent Company to change it's name back to Daimler-Benz along with the signature sticker in the windshield? I hate this very deliberate elimination of the Benz name. Karl has likely shifted in his grave.

I totally agree with you on bringing back Daimler-Benz name to Parent company as 'Benz' is getting omitted from lot of important places.

Also loved 4DYNAMIC for AMG models, but better to retain 4Matic as its so established.

BMW has patented some technologies in conjunction with "dynamics". But I'm not sure if this is applied also for the word "dynamic".
:)

Maybe my joke was a bit dry. I was making a sardonic comment that BMW like to use the word "dynamic" as much as possible in press releases.

Would be cool if AMG made a limited to 50 units hyper car for their 50th year anniversay....
and maybe make a limited to 50 units AMG model for each of the current AMG Model Line up...

50 could be a too small numb, instead they can have a special anniversary edition with 50 numb for this hyper-car along with all other model line-up
