Aside from the constant snobbery of the hosts, I had the same sentiments driving the two back-to-back extensively. While the 7 Series has impressive tech and slightly better performance, the sense of luxury and comfort is far greater in the S-Class.

Apples and oranges really, both are excellent automobiles.

Finally someone said it other than me, things start at Mercedes with the S class, and with BMW it starts with the 3er, thats the big difference in everything they do.

You mean everything sub s class is worthless while everything above the 3er is gold ?

^ No the 3er is ok and everything above suffers as it has the 3er as base.
The S class rules, everything below get some of that greatness so they end up being great.

I noticed that both cars were equipped with four wheel drive, which is odd considering they were in California.

You can't get the magic body control or airmatic in the S550 4Matic, so kudos to Mercedes-Benz for designing a car that you don't need to specify with air suspension to have a comfortable ride.

Regarding MBC you're right. But the S550 4MATIC does come standard with AIRMATIC (airsuspension)

I'm genuinely befuddled as to why some of you feel BMW would/could/should best Mercedes in a game they created with the S-Class. The review was spot on, irrespective of the hosts silly antics

It's more of a preference. If you want luxury MB is 100% the way to go to. And if you want a bit of sportiness, you go for the Bimmer. Both are fantastic cars, just with different thoughts behind them.

I'd take a lovely 760Li though
