918 direct rival? yes please!

This is why i love MB,from hyper cars and high end luxury sedans to premium entry level hatches there's a star competing in every segment..remarkable. :)

AMG RUMOURS:

I've read in the latest issue of Wheel's magazine that AMG is working on up to 4 standalone models and the company is to become a direct rival to Porsche. The article even said AMG is working on 4 door rival to the Porsche Panamera.

@Wolfgang any fuel to add to the fire? I love the idea of AMG growing into a brand.

4 standalone models sounds good, some of which may be developed with HPP in Brixworth. Here some speculations what the 9 new AMG models by 2020 without predecessor might be, following MB Passion discussions. Not counting the GT, which should receive a GT3 in 2016: AMG C 63 Cabriolet AMG GLC 63 AMG GLC 63 Coupé AMG E 63 Coupé AMG E 63 Cabriolet AMG GLE 63 Coupé AMG S 63 Cabriolet with the last M157 and AMG S 65 Cabriolet. :)

Strange reason to love a company for, but whatever ;)

That said, a non-Tobias source explained that the G-Wagen is safe through 2030. This makes sense, as AMG sold more than 3,000 G63s in 2014. That said, big changes are coming to the G within a few years.

Great it is safe until 2030! And I hope the big changes will be the upgrade to W222 style interior parts and switchgear for the console.

That 4 door rival to the Panamera would be a very interesting one. A sort of super CLS based on S-Klasse?

This has been rumored since the W222 was in development. The next CLS should be a more expensive model than the S-Class, W222 based, and aiming to fight the Rapide, and the Panamera. Mercedes can simply name CLE to the new W213 based 4 door coupe.

^^Yes, rumour has it. Though MB has thus far only mentioned up to 6 S-Klasse types: S SWB/LWB/XLWB (Maybach)/XXLWB (Pulman)/S-Coupe/S-Cabrio.

Talking to motoring MB recently revealed considering further S-Class models beyond the six, which may follow the state limousine / Pullman to debut in the first half of 2015 and the "model for star-gazers" probably alluding to the soft top cabriolet in the second half. It might for example be a 2 door or 4 door shooting brake, inspired by the Concept Fascination shown below. :)

I doubt it is a new CLS based on the W222. It really sounds like an all new model. They have really nailed the GT, a 4 door coupe made entirely by AMG should really be something.

Btw, @Wolfgang any news about a new 4 cylinder for MB? They are a bit behind the curve here IMO. I think their new V8 and the upcommming I6 are and will be up to the best engines on the segment, but the lower end engines are a bit old now.

^ A new 4 cylinder engine family is in the works. Believe it was mentioned e.g. in the W213 thread a few times, when talking about the related inline six. :)

German brand's hot rod division ready to defend its title of having the most powerful four-cylinder engine against arch-rival Volkswagen.

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division is primed for a four-cylinder power war with arch rivals from within the Volkswagen Group.

The hot rodders from Affalterbach established a new benchmark with its first-ever hot hatch in the A45 AMG, which is driven by the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine; a 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo charged four cylinder.

But Volkswagen is planning to trump that with a four cylinder that can produce even more power.

The German brand displayed the Golf R400 at the recent Beijing motor show which produced 294kW while its sister brand, Audi, utilised the same engine in the TT Quattro Sport concept at the Geneva motor show but with a higher state of tune to generate 309kW.

AMG’s product planning manager, Oliver Wiech, told Drive during the launch of the S-Class Coupe in Italy last week that his division is prepared to defend its position in the race for more powerful four-cylinder engines.

“I would say, today we are alone in this segment,” he said.

“We pushed a car into an arena of performance compact cars where there is no competitor right now. We know that competition will rise and they don’t sleep. I guess we are prepared for this."

Despite a prototype A45 with wider wheel arches caught testing in Germany last year, Wiech denied reports AMG is developing a Black Series version of the A45 or CLA45 to take on the red-hot VWs.

Instead he says the company created a plan from the start to continually improve the output of its first four-cylinder engine over time.

“We went into the segment with a plan, and not with a single spot just to come in and let see what happens," he said.

"Right now, we are on top and we try to fix this and stay there in the future.”

Yep, apparently MB is working on new I6, I4 and I3. It seems I6 debuts on the W213, but I´m not sure about the new I4 and I3. I think they should all debut with the E-Class (not the I3), or with the C-Class facelift worst case.

Mercedes to renew 'almost its entire range' of crossovers in 2015

Daimler has revealed some new details about their future product lineup at their annual press conference in Germany.

While the company primarily focused on financial results, the automaker confirmed plans to "renew almost its entire range of SUVs in 2015." Mercedes declined to go into specifics but the company is working on a number of new and updated crossovers including the GLC, GLEand GLS.

While the latter two models are simply updates of the M- and GL-Class, the GLC is an all-new model that will replace the GLK. Mercedes has been tight-lipped about the model but previous spy photos have shown it will feature a two-bar grille, distinctive character lines and more curvaceous bodywork.

Engine options will likely carryover from the C-Class, so expect an assortment of familiar petrol and diesel units. There should also be a new AMG variant with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that develops 476 PS (350 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque.
