X5 [Official] BMW X5 (F15)

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

The third-generation BMW X5 is only three years old but the model will reportedly be replaced as early as next year.

Speaking with Motoring, BMW Group Australia managing director Marc Werner confirmed a new X5 is in the works and revealed it will ride on the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform that underpins the new 7 Series. The executive didn't have much to say about the model but suggested the current X5 will have a shortened lifecycle because the next-generation X5 will spawn the basis for the X7.

BMW has been relatively tight-lipped about the X7 but the publication is reporting the model will be about 1.6 feet longer than the current X5 and will weigh approximately 4,188 pounds in its heaviest configuration. That's not exactly light but it's not too shabby for a full-size crossover that can comfortable seat seven adults.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but the X7 is expected to be offered with a variety of different powertrains including a 3.0-liter inline six, a new V8, and possibly even a 6.0-liter V12 in the ultra-luxury variant. There should also be an eco-friendly plug-in hybrid model that has an electric-only range in excess of 31 miles.

Maybe the LCI or FL will be launched next year, not an entirely new model. BMW wouldn't spend so much money investing in the X5 and give it only a 4 year life cycle, it would be a huge loss.

2016 BMW X5 earns five-star safety rating from NHTSA

BMW’s largest SUV – the 2016 BMW X5 – has earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2016 X5 received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test. The rating applies to rear-wheel-drive and xDrive versions of the X5. The high-performance X5 M and the new xDrive40e hybrid were not part of this testing.

The 2016 BMW X5 comes standard with stability and traction control, high-performance antilock brakes with automatic drying, hill-descent control, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.

The optional Driver Assistance Plus package includes active blind-spot monitoring, a side- and top-view camera system and lane-departure warning.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the 2016 X5 two scores of “Good” in crash tests.

BMW X5 and X6 models will have new seat supplier

BMW will seemingly change the current seats supplier for its BMW X5 and X6 models as pricing issues drove its traditional partner to stray away. In a recent article published by Automotive News, it is reported that BMW will be looking at its long-time partner, Magna International to pick up this role as well, apart from its usual business.

According to the publication, the two sides couldn’t see eye to eye on the tricky issue of pricing and the old provider of seats for the upper-echelon of BMW SUVs, Lear Corp, decided to simply back out of the deal altogether. “We had a great facility and relationship with BMW,” Lear CEO Matt Simoncini told Automotive News “And it’s disappointing when this happens, but we made the conscious decision not to sell at a loss … The BMW business wasn’t making money for us.”

On the other hand, Magna just celebrated the groundbreaking for a manufacturing facility just outside of BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the US, where it will be making seats for specific models. At the moment, all BMW SUV models above the X1 are manufactured in the US at the neighboring plant, which should reduce costs with shipping and, in turn, delivery times. Chances are the upcoming X7 will also be using seats made by Magna as soon as it enters production.

“This is a new chapter in the ongoing collaboration between Magna and the BMW Group, as it’s our first seating business award with this valued global customer,” Magna Seating President Mike Bisson said. At the same time, the Austrian company has three other facilities around the Spartanburg hub, providing various parts for BMW, from vehicle bodies to mirrors.

^ Good riddance!

Lear is a POS! They were totally responsible for rusty seats in 1er & 3er!

I hope BMW ditches Lear completely asap.

They used to make great seats for Volvo, don't know if they still do.

I'm sure they know ( / once knew ... ????) their business.

Lear is still the leading seat supplier nonetheless. BUT when pressed for lower prices they just cave in and come out with a shitty, sub-par product, not suitable for premium (if any at all!) cars. Magna can do it, other can do it. Lear obviously somehow just can't. And I find this a quite problematic in such a competitive environment. They better find new, more resourceful & capable top management ASAP before it's too late. They have obviously rest on their laurels a bit too much.

Was having a look at the X5, and I wasn't impressed by some areas of the interior, like this, hard plastic with some fit and finish issues just below the wood trim.
