7 Series [Spy shots] BMW 7er (G11) Spy Pics & Info

The BMW 7 Series is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker BMW since 1977. It is the successor to the BMW E3 "New Six" sedan. The 7 Series is BMW's flagship car and is only available in a sedan bodystyle (including long wheelbase and limousine models). It traditionally introduces technologies and exterior design themes before other models in BMW's lineup.

I still don't get why people crave for a M7 (or an AMG S class) for that matter. The original purpose of V12 in a luxury car was not power, but the smoothness. Why muck all that by adding low profile tires, stiffer suspension, louder exhausts. Yes, you need adequate power and torque to effortlessly move a heavy car at a brisk pace. Anything excess is just juvenile dick contest.

Well here is a comparison of BMW and Mercedes models over last 15years (since 2000):
  • Year BMW V12 BMW V12 specs Mercedes V12 Mercedes V12 specs
  • 2000 750i/L E38 5.4ltr NA V12, 240kw (326PS), 490NM S600 W220 5.8ltr NA V12, 270kw (367PS), 530NM
  • 2003 760i/L E65 6.0ltr NA V12, 327kW (445PS), 600NM S600 W220 5.5ltr BiT V12, 368kW (500PS), 800NM
  • 2009 760i/L F01 6.0ltr BiT V12, 400kW (544PS), 750NM S600 W221 5.5ltr BiT V12, 380kW (517PS), 830NM
  • 2015 760i/L G11 Est: 6.0ltr BiT V12, 442kW(600PS), 850NM S600 W222 6.0ltr BiT V12, 390kW (530PS), 830NM
Okay Mercedes have a more powerful V12 in the S65 AMG (463kw/630PS) and Pagani Huayra (527kW/730PS) but they not counted cause the 760iL and S600 L have been natural rivals more many years. So in 12years the Mercedes V12 has increased in power only by 22kw and 30nm, while the BMW V12 will increase in power by 115kw and 250nm, which is a huge difference.

What if...

Apparently, that is what old school Rolls Royce literature stated for many of it's cars. "The horsepower of the Rolls Royce is…. Adequate.”

Classy, eh?

I knew that and that is exactly what I had in mind... that sentiment should prevail.

Well Tarek is right in the sense that there was no need to upgrade the power of the S65, it has very long been in a class of it's own. But when a 'regular' 7er is close to the highest end AMG, it's time to sharpen the pencil and start drawing a new engine.

I the G11 760i has 600hp then MB shall deal with that with the W222 FL..that also means we'll see a 700+hp S65?

True but apparently there's a huge market for such cars.

I don't see anything weird here. MB has not updated their engine in 12 years. Back then, 500 PS for a V12 was fantastic, now it is weak. 612 for the AMG was amazing, now it is average at best. It is clear that MB is not interested in the V12. The next step will probably be axe the V12 AMG, convert them in S600 engine, and upgrade the V8 AMG.

BMW will probably stop adding PS and opt for the hybrid tech for the upper Rolls.

There was also a market for "I am Rich app" (before Apple yanked it from the app store in a day). Doesn't make it a good product/buy. Nor do we have to celebrate it or yearn for it.

I am not calling the people who bought it stupid - though a % of them probably was and a certain % probably did it cause they just could. But either way, it was a stupid thing to do.

Similarly, there are 12 million HNWI in the world in 2013. It takes less than 1% of them doing a "stupid thing" to make a "huge market" a pointless, idiotic car. But as car enthusiasts, let us stop celebrating it or clamoring for more of it.

Yes see the Power eDrive http://www.germancarforum.com/threads/bmw-power-edrive-the-future-of-plug-in-hybrid-drive.52191/

The Vision Future Luxury featured this concept a six cylinder combined with hybrid drive train,
It is also going to be offered in the next Rolls-Royce Phantom along with the regular high capacity ICE.
The beauty of this is with a CFRP structure cell previewed by the VFL and part CFRP chassis is going to bring the Phantom to some serious weight reduction when taken into consideration with other lightweight technology.

I'm gonna have to disagree here..although it might be pointless to you but for i've always admired the sheer overkill of the 65 cars..it represents what MB really is to me..over the top over engineered cars. :)

I completely agree. If we all wanted boring large luxury sedans, we would all have beige Avalons. or LS460s. Having driven (and been chauffeured) in a friend's 2009 S65 AMG, I love the contrast of the ultra smooth V12 with 20 inch low-profile tires/wheels and loud exhaust, and frankly as a car enthusiast, I wholeheartedly appreciate Mercedes for it. Nothing remotely stupid about it.

What a cool comment! And it speaks for the whole German-Auto-Industry IMO. Every brand we love on this forum brings to the table such a wide range of choice, that's why we love em:love:

100% agree.

Very classy. But don't make the mistake of comparing a Rolls to a BMW or Benz. Rolls Royce is unique, like Ferrari. Cannot be compared to regular run off the mill brands.
