Taking your hand off the steering wheel to do gestures that are available on the steering wheel ? I dunno, seems a bit gimmicky.
Its like"Taking your hand off the steering wheel to the gearstick which is available on the steering wheel":)

Well, to be fair the gear paddles were added to the steering wheel later, as it's convenient/faster.

I'm kidding, of course, but i think that gestures in 7 series are just beginning, and in the future, we will see more advance way of using that technology....MO

some of you have said gesture control is useless when we can already use the button on the steering wheel, however in the future when the cars can drive itself, we won't even have to touch the steering wheel and our hands will be free to do all sorts of obscene gestures more safely than now.

Exactly. We will need to find something to do with our hands as we won't be giving stupid drivers who hold up the fast lane the finger! (y)

If we have cars that drive themselves and we have passengers in the car gesture control will probably not be perfect method also as like the Mercedes F 015 the seats will be able to face each other and the passengers and driver will be chatting and using there hands to express themselves in their conversations. Maybe for a lone driver in the car that has it in autopilot mode gesture control could work but then maybe voice control could work better and he can use his hands to do other things like hold a newspaper or magazine to read while voicing a command to the car for turning the radio volume up.

Maybe, if the current trend is anything to go by, passengers will be sitting inside the car in silence with their eyes and hands glued onto their smart phones, and not a word will be spoken to each other.

Lol yeah you right people are becoming less social face to face and stuck on mobile social media too much.

Yesterday I had a conversation with an airplane Captain. He said, that even in Autopilot Mode, his hands were more or less always on the steering wheel. Especially when his co-pilot is a moment away. His original quote:" I'd never take a nap or read a paper in a autonomous driving car". Interesting remark. Oh, there's no gesture control in planes, afaik.

You do have a point, but then surely not having to have your hands on the steering wheel or look constantly out of the windscreen negates the need for gesture control altogether? You have plenty of opportunity to push the buttons on the console.

I really don't want to live in a world where people don't need to use a steering wheel.

Gesture control will be useful for people that have sight problems and wouldn't know which buttons to push inside the car. Voice control will obviously not be useful for people with bad hearing.

See no evil hear no evil:jimlad::pompous::banghead:

This gesture control talk is truly getting tiresome. Page after page....might be an idea to make a Gesture Control thread so that the MB fanboys can troll about the gimmick over there?

Maybe we should talk about the 7 series other gadgets? What about the auto park function and how it manages to work without selecting the wrong parking bay? Lol

Auto park function is a gimmick too because the S class doesn't have it.

NEXT!

I wonder when the German mags will do the first tests and comparison tests with the S-class? Now that is something worth looking forward to!

Give me a break, I like the new 7er, have only mentioned positive things about it up until now, where I called one feature a gimmick and you start crying fan boy troll.

It wasn't entirely serious, not to mention completely not directed to you :)

I was serious about the gesture control debate though, we're going in circles here.

BMW & Uber team up to promote the new 7-Series
BMW and transportation app network Uber have teamed up to promote the 2016 7-Series in the United States.

As part of the partnership, BMW will offer exclusive on-demand test drives and chauffeured ride experiences of the model ahead of its U.S. launch on October 24th.

Starting at noon today, Uber users in Chicago, New York, Miami and Los Angeles will be able to book a complimentary ride with a BMW Product Specialist who will take them to a destination of their choice in the new 7-Series. Users will also be able to book a proper test-drive of the model, in the aforementioned markets, this weekend.

According to Uber's Head of Business Development and Experiential Marketing, Amy Friedlander Hoffman, "We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the launch of the BMW 7 Series than by offering Uber riders the unique chance to upgrade their ride and are thrilled to partner with BMW on this first-of-a-kind experience."

That is very clever and cheap marketing. All BMW have to do is to roam around upscale areas of the Manhattan and pick up affluent people when they hail and Uber. A drive in the car will have a much more lasting effect than a billboard or TV ad.
