1 Series [Spyshots] BMW 1-Series Sedan

The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.
1. Those that buy an A1 because it has an Audi badge on it, despite it being an overpriced Polo, to use somebody's wise words

That would be me. All those wise words, you know... ;)

Btw, I don't get the giant uproar? As horrible as this all is, it was known for quite some time.

Interesting update - UKL is a modular chassis and can be adapted/subtracted as FWD or RWD.

Full decision on the 2er is not final yet (full decision will be taken by the end of the year) and can use the UKL chassis but can adapted for RWD. (BMW M are fighting for RWD because the M2 is apparently even more outstanding than the 1er M Coupe)

What the strategy aims to show is a split between the 1er and 2er , but vehicles that cannot compromise on space and versatility will be addressed via FWD namely the 1er , X1 , X2 and Active/Gran Tourers.
This is the 1er Sedan but the strategy involves a 2er Gran Coupe. So that compact entry lines will mirror the upper segments in the BMW portfolio.

The G chassis or 35Up is too expensive to use for smaller compact cars and therefore starts with the 3er or in the case of the first entry model the G01 X3.

This the 1er Sedan and when I saw it today along with the Discovery Sport-ish X1 X-Sport.
First thing immediately is you get E46 Goose-pimples. It is that similar in profile. But the detail is modern BMW, the headlights connect to the grille similar to the 1er Render but to distinguish sedan from hatch there is a flick at the inner edge close to the grille.
The rear lights are in the typical L shape but more angular in shape.
The model was a styling model so no interior.
But I seen a preview of the new interior which includes extra surfaces and additional (as optional) passenger display interface. The ergonomics are as evolutionary as today's car with controls placed high for easy reach.

The X1 X-Sport (extended X1) is having an "Outdoor" version prepared that adds thicker wheel arches and more cladding to the underbody with a slight raise in suspension height. The X1Xsport is exclusively xDrive and a seven seater. There will be base models what with X line etc. it brings back a more utilityappearance like the first generation X3 which surprisingly some customers missed on the LCi because it was far more durable and could handle stone chips better than the painted surface updates.
Originally intended for China exclusively. This model will now be available in all key markets.

X1 XSport XDrive ... Xcessive?

Inevitable...

Scott, I own an E46. I know the E46. I drive one every day. Scott, that's no E46.
Then you know that they have similar roof slant , a short rear overhang. And mind that the front camouflage has added some extra length, minimal but there is still something to be revealed.

The roof to trunk transition, I'll give you that. But the proportions are still off, way off.

So when is this supposed 2GC going to happen, 2020?

With all due respect, but you just don't get it.

There are two types of people that buy premium cars.

1. Those that buy an A1 because it has an Audi badge on it, despite it being an overpriced Polo, to use somebody's wise words

2. and those that appreciate the effort and the premium engineering of the said products.

BMW's RWD is not just a little bit more fun than FWD. It's fundamentally different and better. Like it or not, the front wheels do not have the burden of acceleration and BMW continues to mount their steering racks on the lower wishbone (in the double wishbone applications), as to have more communicative steering. It's not just about numbers - it's a matter of feel and security - you feel that you can properly drive your car, instead of the feeling that you are being driven inside a vault. It's something completely different, something that despite what you believe, has many fans, not just boy racers.

You care more about interior space, brand cachet and stuff like that. That's completely understood and respected. But you can't just ignore those that are after superior engineering and driving dynamics. Not everyone is a race driver, but even normal people appreciate stuff like that.

And BMW has a unique chance to sell an 1er sedan to all those that want an entry level luxury sedan that is actually good to drive. Instead, BMW will produce a bad alternative to the A3.

I agree entirely the A1 is an overpriced Polo, but it's a nicer place to sit in than the Polo.

You don't get it at all, BMW are in the business of making money, this will be a big sellar, all those other atributes you desire are available in the 3 series, this new 1 series will give you most of what you want except RWD, BMW understand more than you do about who will buy this car and for what reasons. They have done there research worked out there is a market for this car and are building it, they really car what a few people on internet forums think.

So long as the reviews in the newspapers and car magazines are good the great unwashed (not the forum fanboys) will buy it in the hundreds of thousands.

BMW has build a lot of models which have angered hardcore fans yet salescontinue to climb, what makes you think this will be any different?

Exactly! The man gets it.

This is not only about "fun" in a FWD lift-off oversteery sense of the word - it's much bigger than that. It's also about decorum and gravitas: a RWD driving experience feels innately more upmarket than FWD no matter how you choose to spin the story.

He doesn't get it, he's thinking with his heart and not is head. This car isn't intended for hardcore RWD only BMW fans, those people ccan buy the 3 series.

I used to have a E46, this is no where near a E46, please don't diss that legendary timeless design.
E46 had clear RWD proportions, sits low, coupe shaped, ultra short front overhang. While I can't say this one is bad since it's all covered, it does not look like it will be anywhere near the E46. E46 sized maybe, but that's it.

And is this really a CLA competitor? I mean unless the camo hides so much that the shape appears sh!t, this thing is like a grandmothers car next to the CLA, and even the A3 sedan seem to have much more cool favor than this.

The G platform too expensive to use? Well that depends on how much margin you want to make. I didn't notice BMW complaining about not making enough money on the RWD e87 back then, even on those cheap 116i's.

Having said all that, if this was RWD, it would be good enough and I will put my money on one right now, because it balances it out the other cons, and that BMW spirit in me kicks in. FWD? My friends might laugh at me for buying a fake BMW.

RWD and superior driving dynamics are the two core reasons (maybe the only reasons!) that I would buy a BMW.

When RWD was not my top criterion, I bought a Volvo, which was a very nice place to sit in. But it doesn't satisfy me as much as it should.

2016 BMW 1 Series Sedan Rendered

Last week we caught a glimpse of the first BMW F52 1 Series prototype, going out for tests. The front-wheel-drive small sedan was caught on public roads and the world seemed to stop for a moment. For some, it was completely unexpected to see such a car out for tests while others were actually expecting it.

The guys from X-Tomi Design went ahead and used all the current design cues BMW applies to its cars and tried to create a possible 1 Series sedan beforehand. We have to admit it’s quite a looker.

The front fascia comes entirely from the 2 Series Coupe, the M Sport model to be more precise. The sides and the rear quarter seem to have been inspired by the 3 Series. Considering that the 1 Series sedan is going to be a smaller version of the 3er, this makes perfect sense.

As for the technical bits there will be a couple of major differences. Apart from the front-wheel drive platform, the 1 Series Sedan will be built on the UKL platform, unlike the 3 Series and all the bigger models that will retain RWD and be built on the new 35up platform.

The engines under the bonnet will be varying from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder units with more than 136 HP to 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder plants making nearly 300 HP. Of course, on higher-spec models, xDrive all-wheel-drive will also be available.

Meant as a direct competitor for the A3 Sedan Audi and CLA-Class Mercedes-Benz that are currently boosting sales for their respective brands, the 1 Series Sedan will arrive in the US as soon as it’s going to be revealed.

According to our reliable source inside BMW, the F52 will be available in the US as 120i and 125i at first, both fitted with 2-liter petrol engines with power outputs expected between 190 HP and 220 HP. The latter will be available with xDrive.

Looks good as a 4dr, maybe better than the coupe, but it is not E46 in looks or profile.
