6 Series 2017 BMW 6 Series Rumors

The BMW 6 Series is a range of grand tourers produced by BMW since 1976. It is the successor to the E9 Coupé. The first generation BMW E24 6 Series was available solely as a two-door coupé and produced from 1976 to 1989, when it was supplanted by the larger BMW 8 Series (E31). When the 6 Series nameplate was revived in 2004 for the second generation, the BMW E63/E64 6 Series, the coupé was joined by a convertible body style. The third generation F06/F12/F13 6 Series debuted in 2011 as a coupé and convertible, and a sedan variant known as the "Gran Coupé" in 2012. When the F06/F12/F13 6 Series ended production, the "Gran Coupé"/coupé/convertible models shifted into the more upmarket BMW 8 Series (G15) nameplate. The fourth generation 6 Series, the G32 6 Series, debuted in mid-2017 and is offered only as a fastback body style to complement the BMW 5 Series (G30) sedan/wagon.

The 2017 BMW 6 Series will continue to be built at Dingolfing plant

According to a report by Automobile Woche, the new 2017 BMW 6 Series models will be built at the Dingolfing plant.

BMW met with union representatives from IG Metall to discuss the future plans and the proposed savings programs as well which will save about 100 million euros at locations in Dingolfing, Regensburg and Munich.

The two parties also agreed to a reduction of the so-called 15-minute snack break which will account for 35 million euros savings.

IG Metall also wants further investments at the plant, including a new paint shop and upgrades to the press shop.

The 2017 BMW 6 Series, presumably named G32 and G33, is based on the 2016 G30 BMW 5 Series so will feature a lighter chassis and will make use of lightweight materials. The luxurious two-and four-door will remain priced clearly above the BMW 5 Series and retain their own interior.

At least one variant with a plug-in hybrid drive will be added to the 6 Series family, while most of the variants will continue to be powered by conventional petrol and diesel engines.

BMW 6-Series Gran Tourer planned for 2017
To feature electric tailgate opening
A report issued by Automobile Magazine says BMW is planning a 6-Series Gran Tourer.

The next generation 6-Series is expected to come out sometime in 2017 - a year after the all-new 5-Series - and besides the usual Coupe, Convertible and GranCoupe derivatives it will allegedly spawn a more practical yet equally luxurious Gran Tourer variant. Its design will be influenced by the GranCoupe but with a more inclined electrically operated tailgate, a lowered ride height and without roof rails.

Going up against the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, the 2017 BMW 6-Series Gran Tourer will be a more stylish and pricier alternative to the next-gen 5-Series Touring. Expect the next-gen 5- and 6-Series to go on a considerable diet estimated at 100 kg (220 lbs) while the engine lineup will encompass a variety of four-, six- and eight-cylinder units. There are also talks of a three-cylinder engines but BMW still hasn't made up it is mind since many potential customers would be reluctant to see such a small engine in a big car.

The PS is stupid, but the news is great. This is a niche car I can support.

Thanks for creating the segment, MB!

Yes the render is at best guesswork. They conceived a shooting brake of the F06 it was sleek , it was sexy , absolutely stunning but not all markets provided support for the car. It would have looked great on the road and they made a couple of V8 prototypes although they never got as far as computer generated models for the M6 Shooting Brake which would have been perfect.

The idea is being revisited , especially with the 6er moving to BMWs jointly developed sports car architecture. The replacements for the Gran Coupe and indeed the Shooting Brake could potentially take the 8er name. Allowing the 6er to be more sportier and like its first incarnations the CS and E24.

The F06 Shooting Brake was a dead ringer for this.

The first prototypes for the LCI 6er are imminent.

^If the Gran Coupe and a potential Shooting Brake would get the 8er name then with a higher positioning? Coupe and Convertible as a sportier 6 and GC and SB as a more luxury 8?

2017 BMW 6-Series expected to lose 500 lbs; M6 with 600 HP
By Adrian Padeanu

Hybrid version not in the cards

A new report sheds some light about the next generation BMW 6-Series scheduled to go on sale in 2017.

It was only several days ago when BMW facelifted the 6-Series range but details are already emerging about its successor which will be overhauled. According to Automobile Magazine, the new 6-Series is going to be massively reworked and should lose as much as 500 lbs (227 kg) after making the switch to the 35up platform. The vehicle is going to receive a lower center of gravity while the weight will be distributed more evenly.

According to the same report, the next-gen BMW 6-Series will feature shorter overhangs which combined with a wider track should make the car more agile while the coupe and convertible derivatives are going to be smaller. On the other hand, the more elegant Gran Coupe is bound to be stretched as a method to offer more room at the back.

In terms of engines, expect the next generation 6-Series to have an inline-six turbo with 350 HP, along with a 475 HP V8 while the range-topping M6 will get a 600 HP twin-turbo V8 4.4-liter sourced from the limited-run M5 30 Jahre M5. Don't hold your breath for a plug-in hybrid derivative as the report says it won't happen.

Automobile Magazine goes on to specify the new 6-Series models will benefit from active aerodynamic elements and the cars will be offered as standard with rear-wheel drive but for more money customers will be able to opt for an xDrive all-wheel drive system, including for the M6s.

The M6 is going to need AWD. Less weight will mean even less traction..

It is not as black and white as that. Otherwise, F1 cars wouldn't be moving. For one, less weight means you can use taller gearing for the same acceleration which in turn means less torque the tires have to deal with. But more importantly powering out of a corner, a lighter car needs less of the total available grip from a tire's circle of traction in the lateral direction which in turn means more is available in the longitudinal direction for acceleration. A lighter car also means you can use softer springs, which in turn means more weight transfer.

And of course lesser the rest of the car weighs the more weight you can dedicate to bigger wheels and tires (which will increase available grip disproportionately), and still have the same or better performance/fuel consumption figures.

The next generation M6 will have standard rear wheel drive and optional xDrive.
Its the age old argument do you want all wheel drive? Or lighter weight?
So both customers can be adhered to.

As long as they don't use Audi's foot waggle opener, it works for me!

Merry Christmas. Herr Klier. The 6 has been flawless, I am happy to report. A great car. If the Bavarians would just put better stock tires on at the factory, the car would be perfect.

Best.

@SCOTT27 any update on the design of this car? I know you have said the rearlights resemble the VFL ones but, what about the front end? Will we finally see the inverted kidneys?

You mean like that AutoBild Render?
No it is not like that thankfully. The headlights are inverted but not the grille,
It was conceived, applied and then rejected.
You could do a render of the new car if you use the Vision Future Luxury as a base and that is not just the Gran Coupe.

What I saw if we discuss from this angle is that the character-line is a more prominent interpretation of the 7er especially over the rear arches.
It is a more realistic interpretation here meaning it does not stick out as much but it is still defined.

The rear lights are similar to here with longer L shapes than the F13.
The boot lid opening splits the rear lights in which OLED technology will be available.
There are no air vents at the rear this was because of the eDrive drivetrain that powers the VFL.

The lines that split the BMW badge are retained but are longer and form the ledge that wraps around the top edge of the bumper with an opening for the licence plate. Typical of a modern 6er.

There is an Air breather and also a shadow character-line on the lower flanks.

At the front , if we reduce the height of the grille but keep the width and invert the headlights which will have Laser Light on the option list.
The front air intake is of course more open for functional purposes but in a similar shape with function air curtains and LED fog lights.
Depending on model line and design package there are L shaped chrome bars like here descending from the air curtain.
