: City Compact
: F.A.S.T. Family Activity Sports Tourer
: Gran Turismo
: Z2

Sharing architecture with the next MINI , The BMW entry models retain the 1er designation but will be identified by unique badging.
BMW's first foray into the highly contested Premium City segment will comprise of unique concepts with a sporty edge.
The wheels may be front driven or in the case of the FAST optional xDrive.
But the mission statement remains the same to offer a unique sporting impression even though the rules have been changed.

The Z2 now becomes part of the FWD architecture and will comprise of a single model Roadster, The car is extremely compact and will offer a entry choice for a sporty BMW.

The imminent new Sporthatch continues it's success story in a much more rounded successor. Especially focusing on the increase of the wheelbase for rear passenger accomodation. Launched with a signifcant number of features for a new BMW. The new 1er justifies it's cause in regards to it's importance to the coming growth of the Premium Compact Segment.
Allowing luxury options normally found in high end Premium luxury cars available in the compact class.
The new 1er Sporthatch also heralds the introduction of next generation "Efficient Dynamics" technologies in order for the 1er to remain the principle choice as the most fuel efficient car in it's segment.

BMW 2er
: Coupe
: Cabrio

In order to seperate the Performance and sportier body shape of the Coupe and Cabrio BMW will rename the cars as the 2er. Bypassing the need for overcrowding with the new Sporthatch / FWD Family.
The 2er showcases some new design movement with further progressive sporting interpretation of the hatch ,to some the new car looks more 2002 like than before. The Cabrio model will continue offering a soft-top roof and clean design lines without compromising looks and performance.
Both will be launched in 2013 respectively.

Since it is given that the baby 1er M Coupe should really have followed through and be called M1 in relation to the rest of the M cars.
The inclusion of M2 allows the M Division to bypass that dilemma and offer a straight choice of M2. Following on from the exceptional response to the new 1er M Coupe. The new car allows more money and time and the ability to progress. Although the 1er M Coupe showcases what is possible in a tight time frame , BMW will work to emulate the current car by making sure that weight loss is significant a benefactor because it looks to it's forebears with the inclusion of a high performance four cylinder turbo charged engine.

The problem with the current car is it's short window in regards to further progress, there are ideas but not the money nor the time to do so.
This is something that will be rectified with the next generation as the regards to bring a successor "That will push the envelope" for small performance cars.

BMW M-One - Compact Programme.

Although in no way moving forward but currently in the realm of ideas.
with the Z2 now joining the FWD family , The original proposed Z2 which went to the final stages before the car was switched to the FWD programme. Is effectively reborn in this proposal.

With the sub-brand BMWi arriving with individual products with their own design and technology to give the i3 and i8 complete individualism .
Plans are in motion to allow BMW M as the other BMW sub-brand to offer it's own take of Individualism. With BMWi and BMW M to be the first to share material technology this compact MCoupe and MRoadster are seen as potential M models to take on the successful and revered Porsche Cayman and Boxster.
Individual design , and exclusively M if given the go-ahead the smaller M models based upon the matrix of the F20/F30 could bring new customers to the M brand thanks to the appeal of the M badge, lightweight technology and stunning looks it could become one of the most significant M cars this decade.

Under Consideration:

: BMW 2er Gran Coupe
Extended Four door Coupe of the 2er Coupe with sleek design and sporting coupe roofline. Intended for sDrive family allbeit with optional xDrive.

: BMW 1er Touring / Shooting Brake
Lifestyle Choice , configured in either 3dr or 5dr Intended to be designated as a sDrive model allbeit with optional xDrive.

with the Z2 now joining the FWD family , The original proposed Z2 which went to the final stages before the car was switched to the FWD programme.

And who is this genius who switched the Z2 from RWD roadster to FWD hatch with its top cut and a longer hood ??

Is that the new 1 series...

No, that's the will-be-even-newer 1er Mk 2.5 with FWD which will come a few years after the RWD 1er "true" Mk2. But 1er Mk 3 will be all FWD no more RWD.

Confused much ?

This whole FWD "true driving machines" BMWs will backfire and bite them in the A$$ !!!

This whole FWD "true driving machines" BMWs will backfire and bite them in the A$$ !!!

BMW already do front and wheel drive and do it exceptionally well. It's called the MINI.

BMW recently put two of it's FWD car through a Clinic - The City Compact and the GT. Potential customers actually liked them and were not bothered regarding the FWD issue. Customers like the striking looks of the City car whilst the representitives for the GT were customers who own mini-MPV's were impressed by the space (thanks to FWD) and actually preferred the more stylish dynamic body of the GT especially how it is a mini-van within a mini-van but not in a mini-vans body.

BMW are more interested in appealing to more customers with the FWD family. These specific models are aimed at migrating customers and first time BMW owners.

Again, spare us the CRAP. We're not idiots gullible to made up marketing crap. It's a MINIVAN, PERIOD!

And X6M is NOT a SUPERCAR

It is BMW's interpretation of a mini-van concept, It is more car-like in appearance.

X6M has never been a supercar. It is a High Performance variant of the successful Sport Activity Coupe concept. And the sales are testament to it's existence.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

That was the car I was waiting for. A rwd Z2. I hade given up on the NA 6 cyl. Were only expecting fours but was still interested.

A 1200 kg 2,5 6 cyl ~220 hp would have been absolutely perfect. Low weigth, low moment of inertia. Was hoping for low center of gravity. Manual 6 speed. LSD, perferably mechanical. A magificient induction and exhaust noise.

But FWD? Sorry i cant accept that in my fun car.

It was the weekend toy I was after.

For me, next (and final?) hope from BMW 2 series coupe?.
Though it needs to be light, and I still (ignorantly) pray for a 6-cyl.

I just think it is a bad idea to have a FWD Z2. Come on, arguably "the" iconic small BMW roadster, something that BMW haven't made for a long time and it will be a FWD which cannot even do a slide? Come on, why not just get a MX-5 for a fraction of the price instead? MX-5 is a damn great car, or why not a 370Z? I don't think it's purely about customer retention, it's about the general characteristics of the car. OK i know most "customers" that BMW talks about doesn't care about FWD or RWD, but it is about a belief, a tradition that RWD is supposed to be superior. And paying the premium for a BMW, I strongly believe that their "customers" deserve all the superiority even if they "do not know about it". From a short term, customer attraction point of view, maybe this doesn't matter, but in the long term vision, it should be built to what BMW think is the best (don't tell me they think FWD is the best because i won't believe it, apart from being cheaper to make). It doesn't matter to have the Mini-Van variant to be FWD, because partly it meets its purpose for offering more space (in a cheap way to go against the A and B classes i guess), but Z2.. seriously, FWD is SOLELY for cost cut. I hope the entry model will be as cheap as a Honda Civic then.
Thankfully no M version for FWD cars, that would be an absolute nightmare. But unfortunate that the Z2 won't be M-powered.
And, a 2er GranCoupe under consideration? I mean, how sleek can they make the car? How low can the roof line be? I just cannot imagine they can differentiate between a 4 door coupe and a sedan with such a short size. Just look at the current 1 coupe, the shape isn't exactly "sleek" already due to its shortness... to have a lower roof line, the guys at the back seat basically has no head room, and why would they want doors for them when they don't even want to get in?
I don't know, some of the models proposed just seem too over... there is too little to distinguish them apart.

Z2 is cheaper and less exclusive than Z4. If Z2 got 6-cylinders and 200 hp it would be a direct rival against Z4 sdrive23. Not good. If you want more luxury and RWD it got to be Z4, not Z2.

The point is that it can still be positioned sensibly without having to be FWD. Mazda can do it with MX-5, Toyota can do it with MR2. All it needs are options of two zesty 3 or 4 cylinder turbo engines and, coupled with RWD, Bob's your uncle. A FWD BMW Roadster would be on a whole new level of wrong.

And this looks absolutely hideous.

What he said.

And it's expected to actually look like that? BMW's foray into FWD territory will certainly be interesting. IMO if that Coupe thing above comes out, it'll have a comfortable spot in BMW's trash bin, next to the 5'er GT.

I'm already longing for the days when BMW (and Mercedes) just had a handful of models, there were perfected to lengths that ensured nobody could touch them. The good 'ol days.

Actually the design department is currently overseeing a 2002 hommage.
And the new car (2er Coupe) will segue into this , design wise. It is not going to be a Coupe variant of the 1er like the E82 It is becoming more distinguished. But that idea with the Coupe works in real-life , it has more connection with the 2002 now than the E82 did.
