Seems a UK publication have got an inside scoop on the looks of the BMW 1er Gran Turismo. Following in the footsteps of the 5er Gran Turismo and the 3er Gran Turismo. Although Progressive Activity Sedan/Coupe makes way for Compact Activity Tourer.

What you see here is how the car will look offering a mixture of 5dr hatch and Touring. Leg room in the rear is almost on par with the 5er Sedan. As previewed in the Front Wheel Drive report.
BMW 1er Gran Turismo and BMW 1er Family Activity Sport Tourer are purely answers to the much demanded compact BMW that must be spacious and flexible like an MPV Concept.
Although you are not getting a typical MPV come-van shape , you are getting something that effectively could rewrite the rules in what an MPV has to look like. Without sacrifice to flexibility.

So this is the real thing? Not bad...will it debut along with the rest of the new 1er?

What do you think? Considering the new 1 Series is on the verge of being launched (launch in summer, public debut in Frankfurt in September) with lots of barely disguised prototypes driving around the streets, yet this is the first pic we've got of the 1 Series GT without any prototypes spotted on streets at all, do you seriously think this is going to be launched at the same time as the new 1 Series?

Maybe we'll get a concept soon.

This is FWD - Hence the LegRoom of a 5er Sedan , no transmission tunnel , no drive to the Rear Wheels.

Ok, now I am confused.

You have told us numerous times that the next 1er and 3er will share the same modular platform, which means that they will be both RWD.

But then you say that the 1er GT will be FWD.

Does this mean that the 1er will be FWD in the end, or will the 1er GT be based on a whole different platform, which will be the base of some other smaller (?) FWD products?

The Modular architecture underneath the next 1er and 3er allows for both FWD and RWD configurations , and of course All Wheel Drive.

I can understand it. But this raises more questions:

1. Why opt for FWD in this 1er GT? To save space from the transmission tunnel and the rear differential?

2. Why is this modular platform made to allow FWD? Are more FWD models planned on this platform, other than the 1er GT?

3. Since the platform is made to offer both RWD and FWD, which configuration is more economical to produce?

4. Will this mean that the 1er will be FWD in the future? Since, some versions of the model will be FWD (like this 1er GT), why would other versions (like the regular 3dr and 5dr) have a different configuration?

Scott please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that these are different platforms. The 'traditional' 1-series models (hatchback 3/5 doors, coupe, convertible) will share the platform with the 3-series for one more generation. All other 1-series variants will have a new FWD platform which is shared with Mini.

There's a reason why all but BMW offer FWD in that class, and it's not driving pleasure. :D

Autobild says yes, Scott says no. A viable way would be to rename coupe and convertible to 2-series and let at least these two models keep RWD. Again, we're not talking about the next gen coupe (F2x) but the one coming after.

Best regards,

PS: Scott, you're sure it's 2/11 and not 2/21? :)

Does that mean we can switch from FWD to RWD using iDrive menues :D

This is how I feel about FWD :t-banghea

@ South. Yes you are correct I am mixing my 1's with my other 1's.
1er GT is based off the MINI Countryman platform which will also share with other BMW FWD Concepts and MINI's.

Can You wait?

Good looking, apart from the hideous rear lights - designed by a dead monkey, who, before he died, stole them off an old C-class coupe...

...and I'm still hoping for something better than the pig-face from the 5 GT and 7-series.
