Audi presents A3 concept in Geneva

Attractive concept car as a four-seater notchback sedan

Five-cylinder, 300 kW (408 hp) turbocharged engine with quattro drive

Based on the successor to the Audi A3

Audi will present an attractive technological concept car based on the coming generation of the Audi A3 at the 81st International Geneva Motor Show in early March 2011. The four-seater notchback sedan offers a glimpse of the future expansion of the A3 family.

The sporty yet elegant design of the Audi A3 concept integrates the single-frame grille with its tapered upper corners and headlights with the latest generation of LED technology. The low, flowing roof dome and a coupe-like, low C pillar are among the defining features of the side view.

The Audi A3 concept is 4.44 meters (14.57 feet) long, 1.84 meters (6.04 feet) wide and just 1.39 meters (4.56 feet) high. These proportions emphasize the dynamism of the car's appearance, as do the performance figures for the drive unit. The five-cylinder turbocharged engine has a power output of 300 kW (408 hp). It distributes its power to all four wheels through a seven-speed S tronic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

The second sketch is glorious. A sedan shape for the concept hints at a much necessary product line extension for the car. I'd imagine a four door A3 would be like an upmarket Jetta. Blade-shaped headlights coupled with an octagon shaped grill have finally made it from concept to production car and A6 seem to have drawn first blood on that.

My dream car would be the 1er in sedan form.
But this one in S or RS form with NA engine and AWD...
Make it and it would be my new dream car!
And you can bet I'll be the first one to order it :eusa_pray

While the exterior design appears to be predictably Audi, the cars' dimensions are very interesting. At 1.84 m wide and 1.39 m high (or better said low), this is set to become quite a looker.

WOW is right.....too bad it won't look like the sketch. Honestly sketches are just plain lame and such a huge letdown when the product is finally shown. We all know (or should know) that the car won't be the gorgeous and swoopy looking. If anyone ever builds a car like a sketch they would corner the market. Even the most hateful of the Audi haters would want an A3 if it looked like that.

That said, if they get anywhere close to that they'll have a huge hit. And this time maybe they'll do the right thing and bring it to America immediately.

It's the engine that most interest should be noted as chat is the next RS3 and TT-RS will have this output since the S3 and TT-S are to be upped to 300hp. I only hope this aggressive styling makes it to production without to much toning down.

Any ideas/guestimates on market introduction? 2013/2014 etc?

Some reports state that this saloon version is for the US and China markets only. Anyone can contradict this ?

Which model are you refering to, the saloon or the saloon with this engine?

If it's the saloon model then probably shortly after the intro of the hatch. If the latter then probably 2015.

I imagine these reports might be true as Europe favour hatchbacks in smaller cars but if Audi were to feel there was a marketing case for introducing it else where then they might. We'll probably know better when we know where it's to be manufactured from. :usa7uh:

A3 sedan idea is really great, as I am still waiting for an 1er sedan. Front looks like a silly A6 copy and paste.

I would be quite confident that Audi will indeed offer this car in all EU markets. Should the car have a sporting demeanor with a fastback Sportback-ish design theme, it should attract a good number of the so-called style conscious potential customers. In short, those who are enthusiastic about the A5 and A7 Sportbacks but require a smaller automobile. And with M-Bs' mini-CLS CLC under development, this indicates that a new market segment may be in creation.

I really like this car. I thought about it all day long while I was at work and for me it looks the perfect car. It is a one of the best package I can think about: it is small but not tiny, looks sporty but has 4 seats and 4 individual doors so that anyone can easely get in and out, not like in a coupé, it has a proper trunk, and it is really very fast with such an engine, plus it is secure with its AWD, also it has one of the most uncommon engines, as it is a 5 inline, then it has very nice proportion compared to the new A6, A7 and A8 with the very long overhangs. Again the performance will be amazing, it will be much faster than an M3 E92 due to more torque, nearly same power, less weight and AWD, and it won't sound that bad.

At the moment I just cannot believe it I want an Audi.

But mow I remember something that SCOTT27 posted on 12 February 2011:

BMW 1er Gran Coupe Sports Sedan

- Demand for a four door in the important US Market
- Could be built in Spartanburg
- A more sporting approach without intercepting important euro fleet market for lower engined BMW 3er models.

- Rear wheel Drive
- Unique styling Concept from the sporthatch.
- Returns to the formula of the classic BMW Sports sedan.

The European fleet market for BMW is a tightly contested market that is dominated by the lower BMW 320d and BMW 520d models.
This is one reason why BMW have not sought to introduce a 1er based sedan in light of the 1er being proved to be too small with fleets resorting to the C-Klasse and A4 Audi.
With demand for a 1er that can fit within the important US Market , The world of a premium sporthatch does not fit as the premium BMW will charge for the Sporthatch in the US will not make the 1er competitive with the relevant VW Golf.
One solution is to introduce a four door 1er but under the disguise of a four door Coupe in the mold of the BMW 6er Gran Coupe - Giving it a sleeker appearance and a more niche market. Based on the 1er the car will retain Rear Wheel drive and offer the more performance-led diesel and petrol four cylinder turbo charged family.
Designed to emulate the classic RWD BMW Sports sedan , small compact but instantly recognisable.
One option could be to manufacture the car in the US.

After Audi R8 vs. BMW Z8 and Audi A7 vs. BMW 6 Series GranCoupé, now again Audi is ahead of BMW with its Audi A3 Sedan/Coupé vs. BMW 2 Series GranCoupé.

Now if there was an M2 GranCoupé with TT 2.5l I5 (possbile, just add one cylinder to N20 or take one cylinder from N55) that reved till 8.000 RPM weighed 1400 kg and looked sexy in and out....:eusa_pray

This, in my opinion, is what Audi should have done for the A7. In other words, this should be the A7 and not what they have done that looks like a sedan/wagon/hatchback.

I'd buy this thing, and I'm a BMW fanboy. This thing makes the talk of the 1er Gran Sport more interesting to me as well....

I don't get all the complaining about expanding product lines, some of this stuff is going to be outrageous!

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951).
