Smart expands product range: 4-doors in 2014!

Daimler's smart brand expands the product range in 2014, and offers a four-seater smart forfour again.

On the weekend of the 1st and second July 2006 the last 4-door smart left the production line, and is now in 2014 celebrating its comeback.

That the smart forfour will come in 2014, smart boss Dr. Annette Winkler officially announced last weekend at SMART TIMES 2012 in Antwerp: "... do not worry, by 2014 we will again have the 4-door available! " The vehicle is thus confirmed officially - such a statement was missing so far. Most likely, the vehicle will be created in collaboration with Renault.

48,800 units were sold of the previous model in 2004, and 43,700 units sold in 2005 - the expectations were not achieved in those days. Translated from MB Passion

Yes, smart ForFour will be based on next Renault Twingo, and it will also be manufactured in the same plant Renuult Twingo is produced: Renault's factory in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

I guess we can expect smart For4 will be restyled & re-branded Twingo, just like MB Citan is restyled & re-branded Renault Kangoo. Smart For4 has never been an independent model - the last one was just a restyled & re-branded Mitsubishi Colt.

What's next? Mercedes A-class & Renault Megane sharing platform? Ouch!

The new Twingo is a very nice little car, though. If MB is going sporty and youth as with the new A-Class, then the Twingo isn't a bad choise to base the forfour on!

It will be based on the same platform, I don't think it will be like the Citan where it shares essentially all body parts.

^ Forfour might share longer Twingo III platform. ;)

The collaboration began with three project pillars:
  • Joint smart/Twingo architecture: The project is on track for launch in the early first quarter of 2014. Two-seater smart vehicles will be produced at Daimler’s plant in Hambach, France, and four-seater smart and Renault production are slated for Renault’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
  • Powertrain cross-supply: The Alliance is supplying Daimler with compact three-cylinder gasoline engines to be used in smart and Twingo vehicles.
  • Zero-emission vehicles: Daimler will provide batteries from its production facility in Kamenz, Germany, and Renault-Nissan will provide electric motors for the use in electric vehicles (smart and Twingo ZE). First releases will occur in 2014.

REPORT: Future smart lineup to include cabriolet and crossover offerings

The forthcoming generation of smart models will start coming out towards the end of next year. Apart from the standard fortwo and fortwo+2 choices, the mini-class brand of Daimler AG will make room for two niche versions that are expected to sell like hot cakes: an open-top and a crossover.

As you already know, Mercedes-Benz partnered with Renault to write the next chapter in the smart story. A new rear-wheel-drive platform perfectly suitable for shared use under both the future Twingo and the new smart two-seater/four-seater models is currently in advanced stages of development. This means the future smart and Renault mini models will also share a series of specially developed, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines featuring low displacement and extraordinary efficiency, as well as special transmission systems.

Sticking to our topic, the cabriolet and the compact "SUV" under the smart brand are slated to be unleashed in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The future convertible will be inspired by the for-us study presented in Detroit and Geneva in 2012, while the "SUV" will follow the trails of the forstars concept showcased last year in Paris.

The street-legal products will be very similar in terms of styling to the show-bound cars and will boast smart's brand new design philosophy. The perforated grille and the tubular LED lights will be present trademarks on the future models. While the smart cabrio displays a two-door architecture and a lowered ride height for more dynamism, the smart "SUV" will boast larger proportions similar to those of Nissan Juke, four doors and a bespoke 4x4 traction system, offered as an option on high-end variants.

Note: smart forstars and smart for-us pictured.

:)

In an interview with Autocar, Mercedes-Benz boss Dieter Zetsche confirmed that all future Smart models will be based around the new rear engine/rear-wheel drive platform. “It is the brand’s defining feature, a unique selling point that sets Smart apart,” he said. “There are no plans to adopt a more conventional front engine/front-wheel drive layout for a larger, additional model.”

Instead of adding a dedicated SUV to its line-up, to rival the likes of the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun, Smart plans to spin a crossover model off its upcoming second-generation Forfour. It will feature a raised ride height and body cladding.
