Comparison tests Autocar: Merc A45 AMG vs VW Golf GTI vs BMW M135i [VIDEO]

Now where is the true M version :D but I have to give it to the new GTI, seem to be a good value.

Today my father in-law called me to tell me he got an A45 for the city :D was consulting me about the seats though

I told him, well you haven't chipped-in in my wedding so you should compensate, an A45 is a good start :D

Don't really think this is a worthy comparison, not because BMW lost but from what's said. We all know the M135i isn't a track car or not built for track purposes. I haven't driven one but from all reviews everyone said the M135i is a very quick, well balanced car for the road, for everyday usage, without the real thoroughbred M blood, which is true right? It's just a 135i afterall with some M components. Even the GTi isn't, should use a R model to compare with the AMG. To me it seems like the tester is a very normal driver and likes the feel of harder suspensions which makes the cars feel more composed, without really reaching limits. Traction control always on on normal roads? come on, you got to really press the throttle at the very wrong time. don't know, some of the comments in the article just sounds weird to me.

Suck it up boys, the Swabians - Mercedes-Benz(and Porsche) - are just getting back to where they've always been - top-dogs in the pantheon of German automotive engineering - after a short interlude - from the early 1970s to 2013 - when the upstart Bavarians - BMW and Audi - momentarily impressed shallow people with their flash in the pan ephemera.

Seriously though, the A45 AMG is a beast, and was always obviously so, whatever EVO, Car, Matt PriorAutocar), 'Martinbo', Uncle Tom Cobley and all initially thought. AMG and Mercedes-Benz more generally are on a real roll, with years of behind the scenes, quiet work now producing real results.

Please do make the effort to provide us with the review of your test drive, if you have time.

So you've found the one review which suits your own opinion (even though you've not actually driven the car), and now you're happy (sorry, not quite as miserable as you were before)?

what will 1M/2M be then?

Yup, see how AMG E63 dominates 550i and Passat? Mercedes is back baby!

Oh and I have a Porsche and BMW, does that make me shallow or deep?

I'm guess this review is from CAR or Autocar magazine, I have only glanced through this review but I didn't notice anything about its ultra stiff suspension so such things must be ignored/forgiven as long as it's super quick. Maybe I'm getting too old to except such failings especially when others seem to be able to offer similar levels of traction without this type of compromise.

Other then this and it's obvious failings inside there's no denying it's a pocket rocket and in this sector has upped the game in terms of acceleration.

A45 is doing whats to be expected, after all its a true AMG. We all know RS3 and 1M is coming to take up the fight with A45, then we can start talk if Mercedes is back or not. Now, the outcome is as as predicted considering the competition. But hey someone said british carmags are wrong about A45. ;)
Personally I dont like the idea that A45 is only available with automatic gearbox but its typical AMG. With M135i both AWD/RWD and automatic/manual gearbox is optional. The upcoming 1M is going to be available with manual gearbox as well.

Sir, are you seriously thinking that a car coming from a true performance division as AMG and one just tuned by such division are comparable? It seems like they are, tho as expected the much pricier car is the fastest here but does that mean that MB is back?
Do you really believe in what you said?
"BMW and Audi - momentarily impressed shallow people with their flash in the pan ephemera."
As Sunny pointed out it's like comparing the E63 to a 550i M-Pack. Some tests proved the A45 to be faster than the CLS63 AMG even on straights and at higher speed... does that also mean that MB is back?
The M5 being faster than the ultra-fast and just released E63AMG S 4-Matic is just a coincidence?
Do you think that the A-Class represents MB as a whole?
How much trust do you have in Autocar for their reviews?
Do MB pay magazines or it's a JLR trademark?
Yes, MB is back but BMW was already here and still is... maybe?

I'm just eager to learn something new from someone with more experience and knowledge than me.

Thank you in advance, Sir :)

I'm confused about what to think now. I was trying to remember Kilcrohane's sermon - Autocar are unreliable and are paid by JLR/can't be trusted etc. But hang on, this is a review which fits with his OWN opinion, so now I can trust them again? Damn, this really makes my head hurt. And hang on again. This is a good review for MB so does that mean THEY'RE paying Autocar now? This is very difficult to keep up with.

I'm sure Kilcrohane will be along soon to let us know the latest on who is paying who and which journalist "ate all the pies" and which JLR product is the worse this particular hour.

What are the "other" cars you are referring to? "Ultra stiff suspension" set up is not ignored or forgiven, it is an acceptable trade off for sharp and responsive handling characteristics.

The new S3 is one example of offering similar levels of traction but without the trade off of ride quality and if you re-read my post you will see that I am unwilling to except this level of stiffness, you on the other hand might feel differently.

Frankly I don't see the need to make a car overly stiff, especially a hatchback which is still regarded as a family car and not an all out trackday special like a GT3.
