I haven't seen the road test points breakdown but I am guessing the C-Class lost mainly due to higher costs. The engine and gearbox seems to be a weak point of this car compared to both Audi and BMW, it is 10kw behind in power and it shows in the performance figures which are considerably slower. The 9 speed auto is also needed badly to replace the ancient 7G tronic. They should raise the power of the C180 to at least 130kW.

I havent read the article and I think the engine in 320i is a letdown as well, their diesel version is better.

Can someone explain why would a German magazine compare C250 to BMW 320i when a C250 is even more expensive than a 328i in Germany? Furthermore 320i doesn't even cost as much as a similarly powerful C200 but is as cheap as a C180.

Base German prices as given by respective German MB and BMW websites.

C180 156HP 33,558 Euros
C200 184HP 36,414 Euros
C250 211HP 40,936 Euros

320i 184HP 33,650 Euros
328i 245HP 38,000 Euros (40,150 for auto)

Am I missing something? Or is it a "Mercedes needs one in it's column" article?

This is the first time new C-lass been tie in handling and winner in slalom category versus F30, This goes against any other review so what went wrong here?
In this test C-class beat the F30 in so many categories , except for steering and gearbox.
C-class scored almost 20 points more than F30 in brake category. WTH!

Yes, read my post above, that is what happened.

The funny bit is 320i costs as much a C180 and is still not too far off C250 in performance numbers. Imagine how bad C250 would have got drubbed if it was compared against the similarly priced 328i.

Here in the UK their prices aren't that dissimilar.

C200 SE manual - £26,855.00 - Standard kit - 16" alloys, Reversing Camera, Elec front seats (height+back adj), Leather Interior.
320i SE manual - £26,565.00 - Standard kit - 17" alloys, Rear Parking Sensors.

As you can see it's the Merc offering a load more standard kit which more than counters the additional £290 being asked.

Maybe you need to closely inspect to spec of each in Germany to see where the price difference is.

If c200 costs much as 320i then the difference between C250 and C200 is larger. How much for C250 in UK which was tested here?

BTW In Sweden C200 costs the same as 328i. You can get a lot of extra options to buy 320i for the same price as 328i.

That 320i must have been a very very good spec car to be able to get those figures cause all other tests I have seen the car does about 7.6sec to 8.0sec from 0-100km/h!!! I agree with all of you that including the 320i (135kW) and Volvo T4 (with only 132kW) is not like comparing apples with apples. Comparable BMW model would have been 328i and Volvo T4 with 176kW engine. Or they should have rather included the A4 1.8T and Mercedes C200 like AMS did!!

To be fair - Mercedes Benz does do brakes better than BMW in my opinion. Not that I have any complaints about mine - on the contrary...

Waiting with baited breath to see what the new C-Class pricing comes out like down here in SA. I am told that it's scary expensive but that could just be a rumour.

Interesting to note a couple of things:

The BMW has the longest seat bases but also the best leg-room front and rear.
It's also the shortest car here but with the best length to wheel base ratio:
A4: 1.674
3er: 1.645
C-Class: 1.65
Volvo 1.673
It has the best rear head-room in spite of it being RWD. Its boot capacity is tied best.
All adds up to noteworthy interior packaging on the part the 3 Series.

C-Class' fuel economy is very impressive and it does have a 66 litre tank too. C-Class is more refined in terms of road noise but not massively so in my opinion.

It seems like the C-Class brakes are slightly better than the 3-series and A4 in what tests I have seen from AMS, AZ and Abild. Interior space most of the mags have measured the 3 series and it has the slight edge in rear legroom and headroom over the C-class.

Martyn I managed to find the new C-Class prices in SA on IOL.co.za and it will be launched next month, it looks the prices have increased quite a bit and its quite expensive:

C-CLASS PRICES:

C 180 - R415 900

C 200 - R436 600

C 220 BlueTEC - R459 000

C 250 - R502 600

*Prices include VAT but exclude CO2 tax.
