Could somebody please tell me if there is a way of using the cruise control on the A8 without using the adaptive function? There was on the D3 model, but I'm driving the latest D4 model this weekend. I can't find a way of using the cruise control without it activating the "radar" function?

Find it annoying on the motorway if it just catches the rear of a slow moving truck in the slow lane and the brakes suddenly apply.

Thanks in advance.

I am not certain if you can turn it off fully, but instead you could set the distance to be kept between your car and the car in front to the smallest possible. In that way the car does not slow itself down in advance and at the same time provides that "just in case" protection. The distance can be set on the cruise control lever.

Thanks for the answers both of you. Yeah, I know how to change the sensitivity of the system and the distance it allows from the car in front. It does appear that Audi have removed the ability to just deactive the radar part completely and to just use it as a standard cruise control. Annoying.

I find it frustrating when it catches a slow moving vehicle as you're pulling out to overtake and the brakes slam on. I'll just try to "adapt".

May I ask Betty, what you are doing driving a A8? :)

Edit: I put my glasses on now and I can see you are driving it this weekend.
How does it feel? :)

Just one of the many different cars I drive all the time. Had a BMW 118d, Audi A3 2.0 TDI, Audi A6 2.0 TDI and now this within the last three weeks.

Have it until Monday and will put around 3,000km on it. First time driving the new A8. I drove the previous model. It's a 3.0 TDI quattro. All the bells and whistles. Feels good so far. Fuel consumption not great though. Was expecting better. I love the 7 Series so it will be nice to compare.

Wow, okay :) And where are all the driving impressions from those cars, that I'd like to read? :)

Yeah, I keep meaning to post my review of a 730d with LED headlights that I drove 4,000km. I will do it, I promise.

Hobby as an enthusiast driving all the cars or are you in the market for a large luxury sedan, Betty?

I'm going to replace my A1 with something next year although that changes on a daily basis between a used BMW 1 Series diesel and a brand new Porsche Cayman S and everything else in between including another M3 E92! Something in the luxury sedan class like a 7 Series is appealing as the prices for one year old examples are astoundingly low. I was offered the use of a 750 Li today but as exciting as that sounds, 3,000km in a two-tonne plus twin-turbo V8 wouldn't do my bank balance any good. I might as well have been driving my R8!

Same scenario here in SA, also very tempting proposition at that. And evey time I come across a BMW Premium Select F01 with that vakue factor for a lot of car it gets me thinking. Only always concludes with the same answer of what am I going to do with such a big car!? What is sad indeed of this particular segment of car - S-Cass, A8 or 7er - the myth of say M-B solid residuals does not count. All three big German brands depreciate equally in value - here in SA at least.

"Is there a car you don't consider buying?" :D

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
