Yesterday was not a leak but someone who was on their toes and caught the car undergoing film and photography work , as it stands this has not been completed so you are not getting photographs immediately just because the car was caught by the press, obviously there is still much to do if they are aiming for a May release.
but then again how coincidental it was for Mercedes to release the first interior pics a new hours later, i belive the spy photogrpahers are in kohoots with MB

Like I said;)

Problem is this: You can do the handstand and whistle "God save the Queen" through your asshole, won't change the fact that if you pull up with a A8, 7er or S-class alongside a Bentley or Roller, you will still be and feel inferior to the guy in the Bentley or Roller.;)
And for those who does not grasp the ^ concept, it's like you driving a Skyline GTR and pulling up alongside a Ferrari F12:p

Compared with this butt, I feel many Bentley/Rolls owners will feel inferior:

And just wait for the 600 pullman, then it will be game over :finger:

:D

Sonder, I recently sold my 1998 E39 5-Series that had over 700.000km. on the clock and still looked pretty damn good inside out :) Will upload pictures whenever I can if interested. And you are a lucky man with your W220 as most of them are inferior :)

Your attachments don't work, but I'm pretty sure you mean the air freshner:

Pullman may have a chance G. If it's as bespoke as say a Phantom.

The S-class, as great a car it is, does not have the bespoke/hand build, exact tailor made everything the Brits have. The S-class is a mass produced car in short and most importantly it can never be as unique or bespoke nor have the same appeal to the wealthy. Let's face it, when it comes to Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston martin, Bugatti etc. it's a no brainer

The Bespoke Configurator Lounge in our new showrooms brings Goodwood to the client. It’s very common for customers in Europe to travel to Goodwood and spend the day mulling over the hundreds of options in our paint, leather, and wood shops. Since traveling to Goodwood may not be convenient for everyone, the Bespoke Configurator Lounge brings this opportunity to the client and allows the client to sit with a sales representative to go through the various leather, paint, and veneer options in a location closer to home. Being able to see and touch materials and then visualize them on the configuration screen allows each customer to create his or her perfect car.

At the Concours d’Elegance in August, we unveiled our latest product, which is a highly bespoke collectors’ vehicle called the Phantom Series II Coupé Aviator Collection. Specially designed to honor Rolls-Royce’s history in aviation and heritage, only a limited number of Phantom Series II Aviator Collection cars will be produced worldwide. Each car will feature custom paint mixed specifically for Aviator and interior design elements to evoke the sensation of being inside the cockpit of a plane. These events allow Rolls-Royce to interact with our customers on a direct level, while giving them the opportunity to experience the timeless luxury and performance of Rolls-Royce first-hand. It’s also important for our potential customers to understand and experience the things that set Rolls-Royce apart from all other brands and make it the number one manufacturer of luxury goods. You will see us at unexpected venues this year throughout the city and, as always, the Hamptons is a natural fit for Rolls-Royce.

Back on topic, here are my 2 cents.

When we say 'the best car in the world' - what attributes of the car are we talking about? Is it performance? Is it reliability? Is it luxury? Is it about pushing the technological boundaries forward? (This IS what S Klasse is all about;)) Is it the something intrinsic, call it aura, that surrounds the car?

All things considered, S Klasse probably was, and still is, the best car in the world. But one cannot simply compare it with Bentley/RR, because those cars are not about all things considered, they are about aura, splashing the money, having ultra-luxury toy. This is something S Klasse lacks, simply because it is not about it.

Now, you also have to bear in mind that B/RR are sold and seen on the street in much, much less numbers than S klasse, AND Mercedes-Benz cars in general. Back in the 60's, MB had much bigger cachet then today. Something which is very important in this category. My guess is, Pullman will be fantastic car. But it has to be completely different visually from the S Klasse, or it will have same destiny as Maybach did, if it wants to compete with B and RR (Mulsanne and Phantom, to be clear).

I've been following this thread for centuries and I'm so happy to see a well designed, cohesive, commanding S Class emerge!

Well done, MB.

As for the S Class not competing at the same level as the RR and Bentley. Guess it depends on how you slice it. MB is trying to push upmarket and RR and Bentley are pushing downmarket so regardless of whether we all think they're competitive, each respective mnfctr. Seems to want a piece of the other's pie.

That's all fine and dandy but the fact remains, RR and Bentley and most other uber luxe brands are heading down market. Why? SALES. Opening up their portfolio to more people. Why else are they considering the SUV, why build the Ghost? Sales, sales, sales.

Flying Spur and Ghost are what the S-Class will have in it's sights, not the Mully and Phantom.

Wait until Mercedes buys Pagani :D
Of course Naas, a Phantom or Mulsanne are on other level, even their size is on another level, but between a Flying Spur and a S class, I'll gladly take the S, thank you very much.

Three things are required for Mercedes to compete with RR and Bentley especially their top models.

1. Unique exterior
2. Unique interior
3. Combination of Mercedes and Maybach name to create an individual product / product line. Mercedes star can still shine brightly in this segment of the market but uniqueness in design and brand identity and design elegance is the key. The last Maybach was not elegant outside or inside imo.

2010 Mercedes sold over 13,000 S-classes... in US only

http://daveknowscars.com/2011/01/04...res-by-model-sales-up-by-25000-units-in-2010/

in 2010 Rolls Royce sold just over 2,700 cars... in total.

As long as S class keeps posting sales figures like this IT CANNOT be a competitor to RR. It is not unique and exquisite enough. That is just my opinion though.

Cheers

In this way Porsche 911 just cannot compete against Lamborghini and Ferrari.

I agree;) Back to the S-class. I can cry and moan as much as I like, M-B won't change or stop fitting the two 60" LED screens in front of the driver, that now aside...the cabin is epic! I must say (in a positive way) this time around the S-class looks better from the inside - out IMO. Love the conservative approach of the exterior design (thank goodness) but the cabin ambiance is out of this world for a mass produced luxury limo.

And my mind working overtime....imagine the relationship you have to have with your supply chain i.e. supply chain management in overdrive to put this W222 into the mass market yet it's close to bespoke! KUDOS(y)
