Bruno Spengler has just won the last DTM race of the season, which gives BMW a triple championship in its first year back to the DTM race series after a 20 year absence! Congrats to Spengler and BMW!

Below are this year's final results for the Driver, Team, and Manufacturer titles, as well as an account of the race, via Autosport.

Race Recap
The key to the Canadian's race was a great getaway from third on the grid as he passed the slow-starting Paffett to slot in behind polesitter Augusto Farfus.

While Paffett dropped from second to fourth, Spengler was gifted the lead by fellow BMW man Farfus at the Mercedes Arena on the opening lap.

HWA driver Paffett climbed to third when Mattias Ekstrom - who had already hit Joey Hand at Turn 1 - pushed the American and himself wide at the Spitzkehre.

The Briton then passed Farfus during the first round of pitstops to climb to second, escaping censure from the race officials despite being initially investigated for an unsafe release from his pit stall that resulted in him and his rival running side-by-side momentarily.

Paffett put Spengler under immense pressure following the second stops, trimming his deficit from 4.1 seconds to 2.0s within just five laps and then continuing to close until he was within 1.1s of the black BMW.

He could get no closer though and was unable to prevent Spengler from taking his fourth win of 2012 and securing the championship by just four points.

Farfus was a comfortable third in his RBM-run M3 while Jamie Green, the third driver to start the race with a chance of the title, drove superbly to climb from ninth to fourth during the race. His highlight was an excellent move on Hand's RMG BMW at the Spitzkehre during the opening stint.

Dirk Werner made it two Schnitzer cars inside the top five. He passed Edoardo Mortara and Hand at the first round of stops and gained a further spot when Ekstrom retired with a loose right-front wheel.

Mortara was sixth, less than a second ahead of the BMW of the impressive Andy Priaulx, Hand, Ralf Schumacher and Christian Vietoris.

David Coulthard retired from his final DTM race after being spun by Timo Scheider at the Mercedes Arena. The Audi man was given a drive-through penalty for causing the collision.

Adrien Tambay and Mike Rockenfeller both retired early on, each Audi driver a victim of contact, while Miguel Molina's race ended when he slid into the Sachs Kurve gravel at mid-distance.

 WELL DONE BMW!

Absolutely incredible acheivement. Motorport is back baby, now Motorrad has to follow and winnthe freakin superbike title.

Mercedes-AMG is an embarrassment. They squandered a huge points lead and lost the title to BMW.

The engineers did not get on top of the tyre problem while BMW and Audi got their act together.

Mercedes should fire all those responsible for the performance slump in mid-season. Then fire Norbert Haug just for good measure.

Congratulations, BMW! Good job!

I wonder if the DTM organisation is going to ban spontaneous weight reduction through oxidation for next season?

Yea, I thought Mercedes was leading when I checked the standing a few races ago. Anyway, awesome achievement by BMW to win the championship their first year back.

Good work from the BMW boys! Audi had a really bad year, so hopefully next year we see a better fight. Ekström gotta pull hit sh?t together! :)

It's good for M/// because they need this kind of thing for advertising. Didn't really win anything since they ran out of F1 and WTCC.

Yeah, almost Audi wins Manufacturer championship. Damn :D But there is also Superstars-series. And there Audi leads championship with the Audi RS5. And that series is kind of realistic series, because there Audi fight with AWD, just like in the real world ;)

Audi´s Le mans race car is RWD. And they have won much races. So it is nonsense that Audi don´t understand to build a very good RWD racecars.

this Year in the dtm is about the equality of all vehicles ;). You said almost that Audi have no idea to build a rwd race car ;). A RWD or FWD car has less grip then a awd car so it would be very unfair. But audi is also good in making FWD cars why they dont race with FWD ?

The car is so mean and badass looking. Specially seen from the side profile when moving.

Because, in many series AWD is forbidden. Maybe this video gives you something to think about it.

Audi didn't win this season because the simply wasn't the best at this time. BMW team simple was the strongest.
Next year Audi or Mercedes might win. Until then , just say well done to BMW and stop throwing around with excuses.

Poor language knowledge is the problem in this discussion.
I don't mean to be rude but I see that this will take you nowhere.
@aleks_16: I think that Audi-Racing got you wrong quite too many times and there's no point to continue IMO :)
