According to Jesmb.de w222 will be available with 4-cyl gas engine.

No one should take offence. Many 6 cylinder engines are being phased out for 4 cylinder with turbo charging which result in good low rev grunt.

New Mercedes S-Class: more details

27 September 2012

New Mercedes S-Class will have a hybrid version
Emissions of less than 80g/km expected
Car to be revealed at Shanghai motor show in 2013

More details have emerged of the new Mercedes S-Class, which is being previewed by a video sculpture, dubbed Aesthetic S, at the Paris motor show.

Mercedes technical boss Thomas Weber revealed that the new S-Class will be the company's first plug-in hybrid car.

It's not yet clear if the plug-in hybrid S-Class will be powered by a petrol or diesel engine, but it will be assisted by an electric motor that will also allow some miles of pure electric power before it needs recharging.

Weber admitted that it would be engineered to maximise fuel consumption, not power; emissions could be as low as 80g/km of CO2, meaning it would not be subject to company car tax under the current regime.

Weber also revealed that the new S-Class, which could be revealed at the Shanghai motor show in April, will be lighter than the current model.

It will also be safer and more comfortable, he claimed. Infotainment and connectivity technology will take a 'huge step forward' over the current S-Class and other Mercedes models.

As for the looks, Mercedes head of design Gorden Wagener told What Car? that the next S-Class will be an 'evolution', rather than a completely fresh approach.

'We're not reinventing the wheel here', he said. 'The next S-Class will refer to previous versions, because we don't want our existing cars to look old-fashioned and be worthless.'

However, Wagener did say that the new car will have a 'more sophisticated and flowing' shape and be less 'stiff' in its appearance.

This sleeker design will also help improve aerodynamics.

With the demise of Merc's super-luxury brand, Maybach, the next S-Class is likely to have more variants available. It's set to have three lengths: short and long wheelbase like today and a super-long 'Pullman' version.

A Coupe, replacing the current CL, will also join the range with the possibility of an unusual open-top four-seater also going on sale and loosely based on the 2007 Ocean Drive concept (pictured below).

WhatCar's inside-track on details of the new S-class is right up there with the revelation that bears defecate in woods and the Pope is suspected to be a practising catholic.

The Shanghai launch date is 'could, should, would...' pure speculation by WhatCar and probably wrong.

This gives more substance to either a March Geneva 2013 or April Shanghai 2013 possible motor show launch date:

" Unternehmenskreisen zufolge soll der Einschichtbetrieb bis zum Anlauf der neuen S-Klasse 2013 laufen. Das wäre nach ersten Plänen ein Zeitraum von etwa einem halben Jahr."

- 'a half year'(from now). That puts production start of the W222 around late March, early April 2013.

Haven't seen anything more pointless than this thread...
The car looks pretty ugly in the last pictures. My bet now is that we are about to see the ugliest S-Class in history, same case as the SL :)

the grille is WTF big. it's gigantic, is it going to extend to the bottom of the bumper like Audi's?

Agreed. It's cartoonishly big. My problem with it doesn't necessarily stem from the size in itself, it stems from the lack of character and sharpness and how they tried to make up for the lack of presence in that aspect by simply making it huge (lacking focusing on the technical design of it, instead just going the cliche/lazy route of presence i.e "make it gigantic".

It's both huge/massive and soft/bland at the same time (the grille). Quite a fine line to walk. Maybe purposefully and tactfully done to have both those aspects working for it? The E's grille is so much sharper and full of character though not nearly relying on being as big in proportion with the rest of the car.

I don't want to be too quick to dismiss the large grill, but it just doesn’t look right; the Ocean Drive integrated a massive grill perfectly—I was hoping the W222 was going to feature something similar.

Maybe the combo of goofy headlights, silly dropping lines and a massive blunt grill will somehow cancel each other out, making for a great looking car.

I appreciate the W221 more and more every day now, and realise just how aesthetically pleasing it really is.
I don’t want to appear as if I’m criticising something simply because it’s “new”, but this generation’s aesthetic just doesn’t appeal to me at all.

The car will be fine. Folks just get dramatic in here that's all. It's always an automotive soap opera when it comes to designs.

The S-class never fails!

The W220 has always been the S-Class that leaves the most unremarkable impression on me--I feel the W222 may just be a rehash of that.
