Doesn't sound like a good plan to me. 5-series Coupe made with this cost-cutting method is ought to become as succesful as the 3-series Compact. If BMW was seriously thinking about this they would probably have given the 6er another production code than F12.
The 6 Series would need to be evolved past that of the current generation into more a CL competitor. Over-saturation of the market isn't always necessary to maintain growth. Producing the best cars on the market however, is. BMW should be concentrating on the upcoming 3 Series.
I guess the 6series really needs to be different for a 5series coupe to exist. The 6series is in the middle between stuff like the A5 and CL, push it up towards a CL but that would make the 6series a 7series coupe, but with a "lower" series number while probably costing more. So why not just keep the 6series as a 5series coupe, and introduce an 8 series?
Instead of seeking out and moving towards competition, BMW should celebrate having identified, filled, and profited from discovering a fairly uncrowded gap!
