There is no competition for the BMW i8. There is nothing in the same range of price that will have the same drivetrain .
Don't let the three cylinder full you... The i8 is a very fast and agile car...

What a contradiction.

i8 is not a supercar.

It's green sportscar. Useful for daily driving too. 911 of new era.

Hybrid ... regular or plug-in ... performance ... mileage. It depends what is set as priority. You can eg. get acceleration in sub-4 seconds but still quite high fuel consumption. Or eg. acceleration in 4.5s and a spectacular mileage figure.

It's all about settings. Sure engine / power management setup can be set more aggressively on expense of mileage. Or even larger displacement engine can be used. But then the fuel consumption is higher.

It all depends on what the initial & primary engineering & marketing goal was: to get best performance @ spectacular mileage, or get best mileage @ spectacular performance / acceleration figures. I guess in i8 case it was the former.

Exactly what the the NSX II is and maybe the 911 Hybrid.

NSX II & 911 Hybrid ... So, I guess those two will be i8's direct rivals when available.

But as said before: when offering a hybrid sportscar you can go for best performance @ spectacular mileage, or best mileage @ spectacular performance. Whatever is a primary engineering / marketing goal: best mileage or best performance.

It will be interesting to see what will be more important for customers ... what will they be willing to scarify more: performance or mileage.

Got your popcorn? The show is about to begin...

Today?

22 Aug. But there is more pre-launch material coming.

The i8 is a progressive sports car. We can put the i8 into context as a what if?
What if the sports car was taken off the road by legislation etc , what would the solution be? how can the sports car progress to survive.
The early reviews speak for themselves that this is a Brave New World.

The i8 is an interesting car from design to drivetrain as you will learn soon...

What is 911 hybrid? an idea, a dream, perhaps even a project?
The NSX II, yes yes, a car that absurdly copy the general design lines from the "Vision" - i8 concept (profile and front, (that's rare honda copying BMW designs lines), and nobody knows for sure what kind of drivetrain will have, or if be like the super "hybrid" that consume 150 gallons to travel 2 km, as using the theme like "la ferrari" hybrid (marketing exclusively).

I have the idea of a flying aquatic transformer electric hybrid, will I need is time to carry in production form.
For example audi had the idea of e-tron R8 based, a great idea! axed, - mercedes SLS with 4 electric motors, great idea! but stay in beautiful blue chrome as a museum piece because they failed to do what they wanted.

The ideas belong to who actually makes them reality. -

Unless you put the V8 from the M5 in it or the I6 from the M3(while still keeping the electric engines)... it won't be appealing at all to me. I just don't think E93 fast is fast enough for such a car and by "such a car" I mean a car that looks like a supercar and is proportioned like one... at least on the outside.

^

Then I guess you're not a targeted population. ;) Be sure the car as it is will appeal to quite some around the globe. As you said: it has the exotic supercar exterior appearance. No other contemporary BMW model since M1 haven't got such design, so ... The design will certainly have an X factor. So will the CFRP / alu construction, the powertrain etc And I guess the targeted population is a crowd that wants an super efficient eco sportscar - looking like supercar. It will be the first plug-in hybrid true sports car out there, so be sure it will find many new customers. Unless BMW aren't too greedy and set the base price way too high.

As said before: the goal was to get best performance @ maximum efficiency. Not the other way around.

Yes, I do see your point.
Yes, price is crucial. At 80.000EUR I might also be in.
