The new M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic

BMW M GmbH is proud to be the world's first car maker now offering a
seven-speed Double Clutch Gearbox specially conceived and designed for a high-speed power unit. Compared with all conventional systems available
so far, this new gearbox ensures an optimum gearshift and even more dynamic acceleration, and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by a signi-
ficant margin.
The world's first Double Clutch Gearbox conceived and developed for a high-speed power unit; gearshift without interruption of power and traction; gearshift management with M-specific configuration; seven gears for optimum gear increments ensuring particularly dynamic acceleration; simultaneous debut in the BMW M3 Coupé, BMW M3 Saloon,
and BMW M3 Convertible.

Drivelogic with eleven electronically controlled driving programs in
M-specific set-up; five shift programs in the automatic mode, six shift programs in the manual mode including Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standstill; efficiency-enhancing transmission control in the automatic mode; sequential gear selection in the manual mode.

Fourth, consistently enhanced generation of the automated manual gearbox in M-specific configuration; further enhancement of the car's dynamic driving characteristics and the motorsport-oriented driving experience; manual gear selection by sports selector lever or via paddles on the steering wheel; both control elements in M-specific configuration and set-up; Shift Lights.

Perfect interaction of the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic
and the V8 power unit in the new BMW M3; measurable and tangible improvement of acceleration; optional sporting downshift performance with int-between gas.

Elaborate cooling of transmission fluid as the prerequisite for absolute reliability and endurance of the Double Clutch Gearbox with Drivelogic even on the race track, when subject to extreme loads and high outside temperatures.

Optimised comfort in driving manoeuvres at very low speed ensured by Low Speed Assistant; automatic activation of parking lock after switching off the engine.

Further reduction of fuel consumption and emissions compared
with manual gearshift and a conventional converter-type automatic transmission.

Great gearbox indeed..4,6 to 100..impressive :eusa_clap..cant wait for CSL to come featuring similar gearbox(faster gear changes are to be expected) :eusa_pray..

I wonder how faster it will be 0-100mph and 0-120mph. Should be better than manual-

It´s a sure bet,if you ask me..:usa7uh:

BTW,is there any pics of this new tranny?I would love to see it bare naked..lol

  • The M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is
indeed the first power transmission of its kind the world over conceived
and designed for engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm.

  • Like in motorsport: dynamic torque peaks when shifting up,
    in-between gas when shifting down.

  • The M double-clutch transmission is the first transmission
of its kind able to handle engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. And at
the same time it is perfectly prepared for high engine torque and extra power

  • When it comes to driving dynamics, the seven-speed double-clutch
transmission offers an advantage over seven-speed SMG already boasting an
extremely fast gearshift by way of the change in gears now taking place
without the slightest interruption of power and torque. In practice, this means
even faster and more dynamic acceleration clearly measurable in seconds
    and metres.

  • Compared with a conventional automatic transmission, the M double-clutch
transmission allows greater fuel economy and cleaner emissions on exactly
the same engine with the same power. This is primarily attributable to the even
more direct connection between the engine and the M double-clutch transmission
as well as the general layout with seven gears. Quite simply, the
advantage is that the larger number of gears allows even finer increments
    between the individual gear ratios.

  • The other end of the gearshift range is Drivelogic stage D1 enabling the driver
to set off in second gear. In this case the clutch is particularly smooth and
soft, helping the driver to set off without problems on, say, slippery surfaces
    in winter.

  • In the automated mode the driver is able to influence the gearshift for example
by taking back the gas pedal slowly and determining himself when the
transmission shifts up. Conversely, by kicking down the gas pedal he is able
to quickly shift back to the best gear for optimum acceleration.

  • Manual mode with Launch Control for setting off like a racing car.

  • To provide an even more sporting driving impression and to further improve
the car’s acceleration, the M double-clutch increases torque and pulling
power to an even higher standard when shifting gears by means of the
appropriately configured Drivelogic programs. In conjunction with the small
increments between gears, these Drivelogic programs give the driver an even
more intense feeling of acceleration, sensing each gearshift as the starting
point for an even greater surge of power"

This is obviously the better transmission choice for the M3 as the manual has got surprisingly much criticism from the car mags.

IMO the joy of driving manual is simply irreplaceable.

Now what I would like to know is:

1) Does the DCT offer just as much involvment as SMG? I know with SMG you can keep the car in any gear at any revs desired. From reviews I have read about DSG it doesnt exactly allow you to redline the car the way one would wish too and the computer sort of over-rides that in order to protect the tranny/engine. Since Gertrag makes the DSG as well as this new DCT, just wanted to know if they share that characteristic?

2) Also, does Gertrag also make the 7G-Tronic for MB? If so, does the 7G Tronic also offer some sort of a launch control feature?

Thanks

i have no answer for the first question but i am very curious to know
7gtronic is an internal inhouse MB auto transmission, much like all their auto transmissions, as far as i know the regular 7g doesn't have launch control, but the new 7g to be used in the new AMG's might, although i have no idea

The most aggressive M DCT shifting programs shift at the readline.

:t-cheers:

Btw, read the press release (link in post #1) ... :usa7uh:
The gearbox is designed for a hard driving, as well as for comfort cruising, or for very slow speeds (eg. in traffic jam). It depends on chosen shifting program.

Perfection, as always...:eusa_clap:bowdown:

I'm scared to think about CSL's performances with this tranny, lighter body and more powerfull engine...:t-drive:

:t-cheers:

Sure, that's usually the case. However the 6-speed manual in the M3 isn't as great as it should according to many reviews I've read. DCT is also much better than automatic transmission. So basically when the manual is not even near perfect and there is clearly a better choice now, why to choose the stick?

Now that is two more segments of the M3 Jigsaw complete.
Only two to go : The M3 CSL and the M3 Touring ( Both are out on on the streets.)

Question to our 'insiders' :

Will there be a non M version of this transmission in the not too distant future, in other words a DCT for non M models ?
Thanks in advance for your insights

My sources say: yes.
A more civilized version of DCT. Most probably in sDrive models (with DPC on-board). As an option over a manual transmission. All the other models will get 8-speed automatic by ZF. Hybrid models will get a special CVT transmission.

So ... that shows BMW aim to offer DCT in the sporty models initially.

I wonder if they will hurl this tranny into the M5??? It could easily take the engine speeds I wonder if it is designed to handle that sort of power??? Perhaps this is the reason we saw those M5 mules a few months back???
