Dear E60.

You gave us an epic M5, a very cool M5 Touring, the lovely 535d and you continued the legacy of what BMW should be: A proper driver's car.

For that I should say: Thank you very much.

But I'm afraid it's not the end of the story.

First off, you only scored four stars in the EuroNCAP crash tests, which is not bad. But we were expecting you to score higher than exactly the same score as your predecessor.

Then you went on to only score a marginal rating in the side impact crash-test by the American IIHS.

Your run flat tires absolutely ruined the ride, your iDrive was complicated to operate, your active steering didn't worth the extra money and there was the solid inescapable fact that the E39 was so much nicer looking than you.

No, I'm not saying you were exactly a minger, however, the E39 was an instant love at first sight and it looked good from every angle. You in otherhand.... Well it took me a while to finally warm your looks and even so you still didn't look good from any angle. Surprisingly, you looked better with a kennel in the back:

Having said all that, you were the most successful 5-Series in BMW's history, despite all odds against you. Along with the epic M5, you gave us the equally epic and surprisingly tasteful Alpina B5:

The bonkers and not very tasteful G-Power M5 hurricane:

And the bonkers and not tasteful at all Lumma Design CLR 730 RS:

Despite some foibles, you still were a very good car; you certainly will be missed.

Goodbye mate. ;)

Fantastic post!! Good bye E60…will not miss you like the E39 though.

Thank you Ree!

Yes, I'm afraid the E60 will not be as much missed as the E39. In fact, I suspect that some E39 owners were disappointed when they saw the E60 and traded their E39s for an E-Class W211 or A6 (c6).

LoL, thats funny. :D Did you wrote that Kowalsky? :)

Yeah sir, I wrote all of that. :D

Glad you liked it.

Yep its been a superb 5er for bmw..
I loved it with M package..
And the M5 is to die for..

My expectations is that the new one will look good in standard mode..
And that the interior is more special and not so sterile as the E60...
And they should up the safety to meet the W212...
It should recieve 5 EURONCAP stars.. at this level and price..

I'm very excited about the F10... Finally we are getting a proper BEAUTIFUL BMW, inside and out.

HOWEVER, there are some aspects of the E60 that I surely will miss, mainly the headlights, which I found more and more striking with time.

And I just love the Angel Eyes combination with the unique "eye-brows"

I love that it had such a daring and avantgarde design, though not beautiful all around per se.

Amazing thread, karma for Kowalski :eusa_clap

E60 was fantastic and will be missed. A great addition to the BMW history!

Thanks for great post Kowalski, karma given. I won’t missed this car sins I decided to keep my M5 for many reasons. I’m having many great rides, enjoy every single one. I fall in love with its beauty, design, comfort, character and great historic engine. A real driver’s car.:t-drive:

It served BMW very well for 6 years.

But things have changed. The F10 has to adress some of the E60's weaknesses:

-Score a five star safety rating by the euroncap.
-Score good ratings by the IIHS and the NHTSA.
-Ride properly on country roads (this was the E60's Achilles heel)

And in the current economical situation, BMW should not charge a premium over the E60.

Oh, the F10 will be expensive.

With the E60, I do not think that safety was an issue, other than on paper. But for marketing, stars and such are, of course, very important.

Style is a subjective thing.

To me (and I know I'm in the minority) E39 is a sack of potatoes, while E60 is the most beautiful sedan since the original XJ.

Seeing an E60, especially the pre-facelift version, always gets my attention.

There, I said it.

Apparently everyone thinks the E39 is the best looking 5er ever, I still think the E34 is the best one.

E39 felt much like the previous generation of 5-series F10, and it still looks as fresh as date one. IMO, E60 is kind of like a special branch edition of BMW model on its own and I've hard time convinced myself to warm up on it. I'm glad that BMW finally took the initiative to offer a well designed F10 5er inside and out.

The improvement of 5er quality is a must and BMW needs to remain price competitive in current global economy.

I'm giving you a standing ovation Kowalski.

The E60 is the car that sucked me into joining German Car Fans and brought me into this community. It is a car with so much to love, and so much to hate.

I'll never forget the first time I saw an E60 in person. It was typical rainy, miserable day in Germany. A guy pulled up to the parking garage in a E60 and stepped out - My jaw dropped to the floor, both in astonishment and bemusement. An older man, who was standing nearby, said something to the effect of "This thing looks awful. What's gone wrong with BMW?"

I inspected the interior, and was enamored with its form, and puzzled by the seemingly low quality of the interior fittings (or lack thereof). The car was sophisticated and hard to swallow - crushingly gorgeous at some angles, and terribly awkward from others.

Chris Bangle's stated mission has been accomplished. That is - "Keep the product interesting all the way through its lifecycle." To this day - when I see a white 550i I still take a moment to digest the dramatic crease that wraps around the bootlid, and the seemingly low appearance of the car's nose when viewed from the rear 3/4.

I look forward to the next 5er - and I anticipate that it will be, in many respects, a better car. But, warts and all, there will never be another E60.

Interestingly, BMW makes a long wheelbase version designated "Li" of the 5er E60 in China.

Built in Shennyang in partnership with Brilliance China Auto (makers of the hideously unsafe BS4 and BS6 saloon cars).

It's available as 520Li: 2.0 16V 156 Bhp, 523Li: 2.5 I-6 24V 177 Bhp, 525Li: 2.5 I-6 24V 218 Bhp and 530Li: 3.0 I-6 24V 258 Bhp. All of them equipped with 6 speed automatic gearbox.

No 3.0 twin turbo I-6, 4.8 V8 or any diesels available for it.

It might surprise some of you, but for me it was love at first sight.
The first E60 I've seen in the streets was some kind of a revelation in terms of its looks. It's so much better in real life than on any photos.
I have to admit that I like the E39 a little bit more (especially the interior), but however that doesn't make the E60 less likeable.
This car was a good step in the right direction: The classiness of a BMW combined with a very trendsetting design. A worthy member of my favourite BMW series: The 5. :)

I'm looking forward to F10 being revealed. Hopefully the next wonderful 5 series. :)

The E60, when it first came out, with its cold and plain interior and strange new look, drove me to the Mercedes W211 as the "best thing at the time" replacement for my beloved E39, which in hindsight, I should have kept. I really grew to like the look of the E60 after a couple of years, but never really "loved" it. Now Mercedes is driving me away even faster with the new W212. I have mostly enjoyed My W211 but do not love it, so I am extra hopeful that BMW will bring me back to the family with the F10 and it will be another car I can love like I did my E39.
