Why no Jag SUV yet?

Jaguar sales are falling, have been doing so for a while now yet one of the best ways to boost failing sales is an SUV model or two so it's surprising that at Tata has not took Jaaguar in this direction, especially considering they also own arguably the greatest SUV brand in the world with more experience in such things than just about any other, the wealth of platforms to chose from is vast.

Come on Tata give us a Jaguar rival to the X5, Cayenne, ML and Q7....... PLEASE.

EVO magazine interviewed Jaguar's head of R&D a few months ago. He basically said Jaguar suffered from a lack of funding during the early to mid 2000s so they are still playing catch up. Now that they have updated their core range of cars, they will focus on getting the X-type replacement first and then they will have a SUV.

I must have missed that interview, thanks for that.

If there's one SUV that would get me out of a Cayenne it would be this. I just love how Jag do things.

Don't see the point. They got LR. The only thing I see worth pursuing is an Allroad version of the recently released XF Sportbrake. Otherwise I see an LR or RR selling much better than a curvy version with leaper slapped on it. I prefer it if Jag spent their time, effort, and resources on a viable 3er competitor than an SUV.

Also, I'd rather Tata first invest in products that are reliable and durable and then start on diversifying their offerings.

Jaguar are always in the top half dozen in the UK JDPower and quite often in the top three. Maybe things are different in the US but here we don't have much problems with they it seems and on a personal note my XF was 100% fault free.

Yeah the LR and RR will always out sell it but Jag needs a sales injection which a SUV would definitely do especially in the American market.

I did this rendering a while back:

Indeed, Jag needs a SUV and a 3er competitor... I really believe they will look amazing :)
Design wise Jag went in the best direction IMO and they only need to extend their range :usa7uh:

They might need it for a business case, but I'd hate to see it from Jag. From what I understand, when they started getting more focused with the new XF style line, they said that they wanted to be more "exclusive" and "sexy", which might have been a lie, but an SUV wouldn't help that case.

They did say that when Ford was running the show, but under Tata, Jag is supposedly trying to go against the German Three.

There are patent images that exists for a Jaguar SUV/CUV. Maybe some of you have seen it? It was earlier this month, but I think somehow those patent images have been pulled in a cease and desist manner.

Jaguar has been so starved for cash until now so give them a chance. I'm sure they're going to be sharing at least one SUV chassis with their partners at Land Rover.

Jaguar rules out SUV but not crossover

March 20th, 2012

Jaguar will resist the urge to join other luxury brands by building an SUV, though the British marque says a crossover-style vehicle is under consideration.

The company’s design and product planning teams are busy working on future models as it continues its product rejuvenation, along with sister company Land Rover, under the stewardship of Indian conglomerate Tata.

In an interview with CarAdvice at the recent 2012 Geneva motor show, Jaguar’s design chief, Ian Callum, ruled out rumours of the company building an SUV but said crucial markets such as the US and China meant the company had no choice but to offer a diverse range of models.

“I don’t think I’ll ever [design] an SUV in my job,” said Callum (pictured below with the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake wagon). “I can categorically say that an SUV as such is out of the question. We have a sister company [Land Rover] that produces the best SUVs in the world.

“An SUV is too utilitarian-like for Jaguar, but maybe there are some grey areas in between we could investigate.”

“Umm, I couldn’t comment on that,” Callum smiled when asked if he had already penned a Jaguar crossover vehicle concept.

“We investigate everything [in terms of product], he says, “because what we know now across the world is that whereas we used to do a motor car that would effectively fit the world market, the luxury market, the world is so diverse now, especially now it’s opened up from America to China.

“Every territory is equally relevant, so you have to think about diversity.

“It’s true we’ve looked at many opportunities [for new vehicle segments] but no decision has been made.”

Rival Italian sports luxury brand Maserati has already confirmed it will build an SUV based on its Kubang concept, while at the 2012 Geneva motor show Bentley caused a stir with its polarising Bentley EXP 9F concept.

Jaguar’s next model will be a compact two-seater sports car based on the 2011 Jaguar CX-16 concept. The company is also considering a model that could enter the 3-Series-size segment.

I hope it won't be the type of crossover that's the equivalent to Audi's Allroad, personally not a fan of those types.

Given how popular the range rover is for its Britishness a Jaguar SUV would be instant hit unlike their recently launche combi.

Found them! Talk about a crossover might be genuine, but these photos don't seem photoshopped. Remember that this magazine reported the patent images of the new A-Class back in May. I am hoping these aren't unauthorized, as I found it really weird that I had seen them at the beginning of the month on either Autospies, Insideline or LLN, then the articles disappeared.

Jaguar plots radical crossover

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Jaguar is promising “breakthrough” design and engineering for a proposed new crossover. If it’s signed off for production, it could go on sale around 2016 to crown a radical overhaul of its complete model range.

Speaking bullishly at the Geneva motor show, Jaguar global brand director Adrian Hallmark confirmed that the British marque was responding to Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth’s wish to “drive breakthroughs in product development”.

Sister firm Land Rover is enjoying unprecedented success with niche-busting products such as the Range Rover Evoque, and Jaguar has been given full licence to break away from its traditional roots to launch some innovative new models, following the announcement by parent firm Tata that it is doubling annual investment in the pair to £1.5 billion.

New model blitz

The new crossover will be preceded by production versions of the C-X16 and C-X75 sports cars and Jaguar’s new BMW 3-series rivalling compact saloon, tentatively due in 2015.

But first, over the next two years, Jaguar plans to launch six other significant new products - either facelifts, new powertrains or new models. “You get your image right first and then put the right engines in the current cars,” said Hallmark. “That’s the best way for us to go over the next two years. Then we can enhance our image further with the sports cars and look at how we can further accelerate our growth with new products.”

Insiders say the focus of Jaguar’s long-term development is the compact saloon. The go-ahead for it from Tata in the near future is a strong possibility.

The crossover, meanwhile, is described by Hallmark as “not the top priority, and not the last either”. Its production chances are believed to be about 50/50, but such a car would fuel Jaguar’s growth in Brazil, Russia, India and China. Hallmark said: “It would give us more geographical growth.”

Three options open

Jaguar could attack the SUV market in a number of ways. Making it a variant of the compact saloon is the most intriguing option, and also perhaps the most feasible. This saloon is likely to be an all-aluminium model, emphasising technology in a market defined by relatively conventional steel cars.

On the 3-series rival, Hallmark said Jaguar “can offer a different proposition that costs more but is worth the extra outlay”.

An all-aluminium SUV spin-off model would be another way of giving Jaguar the uniqueness it needs to define itself against Audi, BMW and Mercedes rivals.

This platform is believed to be a modified and shortened version of the new modular aluminium ‘Premium Lightweight Architecture’ that JLR has developed to underpin its future larger models, including the imminent new Range Rover and, in the longer term, the next-generation XF and XJ saloons. Using the compact saloon as a base for the Jaguar crossover will also allow low-slung proportions.

A second option is forJaguar to leverage the Range Rover Evoque platform and build a compact, fuel-efficient, crossover. A front-wheel-drive crossover is likely to be considered more acceptable than a Jaguar saloon with the same layout. Such a model would also help to reduce Jaguar’s corporate average fuel economy figures.

One less likely alternative is a move upmarket, with a full-size SUV based on the upcoming 4x4 transmission being planned for the XF and XJ. But an SUV based on the XF’s steel architecture is unlikely because the XF’s life will be drawing to a close as the new SUV is due to arrive.

“We have full kit in the group to do what we want to do,” said Hallmark. “We dominate the SUV segment [with Land Rover] and we have an iconic SUV, so we don’t need it as Jaguar Land Rover, the company. But as Jaguar, we need to do something.”

Whatever base is chosen, the design will borrow heavily on the crisper lines and more aggressive flourishes from the C-X16 sports car and it will sport a radical body.

Looks like not to much effort was put into that render as it's basic lines follow the Porsche sketch.

I would have thought that if Jaguar were to build an SUV it would make more sense to twin it with the Range Rover Sport/Discovery replacement.
