What follows after the jump is a great video, shot from the cockpit of a Porsche 918 that's lapping the Nurburgring Norschleife and does so in, more or less, seven minutes, despite a driver's mistake on the famous Caroussel bend.
Repetitio mater studiorum est, so the 918 is a plug-in hybrid sportscar that mates a 4.6l V8 that can rev all the way up to 9000 rpm with two electric motors. The V8 is good for 608 hp (453 kW) while the two electric motors produce 279 hp (208 kW), with the combined output reaching 887 horsepower (661 kW). The V8's power is sent to the rear wheels via Porsche's PDK seven speed double clutch gearbox, yet the combustion engine works in parallel with the first electric motor that produces 154 hp which also serves as the main generator. The other 125 hp (from the total 279 from electric motors) come from the second electric motor that sits in the front and drives the front wheels. The result is a record lap of 6.57 around the Nordschleife, only 3 seconds slower than this one.
