S-Class (W220) w220 Air-matic prob/ g,box fault

The Mercedes-Benz W220 is a range of flagship sedans which, as the fourth generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class, replaced the W140 S-Class after model year 1998 — with long and short wheelbase versions, performance and luxury options; available four-wheel drive; and a range of diesel as well as gas/petrol V6, V8, and V12 engines. Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had somewhat smaller exterior dimensions but offered greater interior volume, particularly in the long-wheelbase versions, and slightly less cargo volume.

Autobahn Newbie
Hello All,
I purchased a nice looking S-Class S-320 CDI 2002 Uk R/Hand drive last week.

1. I have fault up on the dash saying "Airmatic malfunction"
Could someone give me a few pointers in the first routes i should take in fault finding please?
I have read somewhere, that the Relay would be the first place.
Other than this, im a bit lost.
Last car was E-280, Which hasnt caused me a single problem in 1 year.
So its a bit of a worry when i see the airmatic malfunction come up on dash/

2 Gearbox fails to go into final drive Automatic last gear.

It has gone in to final drive, before when car is cool
But when driven again, and then got warm.
Then I slow down for traffic, after this id increase speed.
But Autobox fails to go up further than speed 4 on auto.
Has tip-tronic, but that doesnt alter gear change? any ideas.
Ive been advised, that this could be down to worn down transmmison fluid?
It not ... well im dreading the worst..!! :t-banghea
Since having a local mechanic look at her, we decided that a filter change and new transmission fluid would at least be in order.
FAILING THIS

3. The Navigation unit fails to play any type of CD... Knackered unit?? Or ??
Also the paddles on the steering wheel + -
They do control the volume on the radio playing. #
But the Paddles are UNable, to turn on the navigation on through selection via the paddles on main dash screen.
Also i Cannot change the Language on the Radio via the paddles..

Would there be a lead missing???

Pop the hood and look at the top of the front struts. See if there are cracks along the edge of the rubber plug (about 3 inches in diameter with an air line coming out). If there are cracks it will leak air causing the fault. Also see if the car will raise and lower itself. If the car will not raise up it probably is the airmatic pump, relay and fuse.

Transmission could just be fixed with a fluid change, or it could be a conductor plate or a valve body... transmission.
Check for codes before doing the fluid and filter. If it is conductor plate or valve body then do that with fluid change. Also check for fluid leak from 13 pin connector, if bad fluid could leak up the harness into the control module. Fix for that is control module and new 13 pin connector and cleaning of harness.

Navi unit could just need updated disc or unit.

Not sure about the steering wheel controls, but may need to change the setting through the Comand unit.

Airmatic fault

Hello,
I have checked, the top of the front struts.
By putting a small amount, of Washing up liquid in water.
On top to check for bubbles, but no bubbles rise from them.
The car does rise, about 30 seconds after initially starting the car.
But the fault does show, virtually same time car has been started. :t-banghea
Not sure if this would relate to a probable cause?

How long should it take before rising comences?

Im beginning to either think it could be a faulty sensor, or maybe a delay in rising somewhere along the line.

I have heard that the compressor should be heard, when rising.
I,ll have to check that a little bit later one i return home.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks again
Andy

The pump should be right behind the front right bumper. So since you sit on the wrong side of the car right in front of you.
Drop the car down and then raise it up and then drop it down and raise it up and move to the front of the car you should here the pump running.
Fault could also be caused by a leaking strut front or rear or a leaking line or other component, or a bad sensor.

If the airmatic reservoir if full the car will start to raise right away, if it is empty then it must fill up before the car starts to raise up.
