Volkswagen's Stefan Jacoby has his sights set on turning the German company into the largest automaker in the world. Oh, and he also plans to turn a profit in the process. Perhaps someone should remind him how that's gone for Toyota and General Motors over the last few decades? Just like any proper plan to attack the global automotive market, VW's strategy includes introducing new models aimed at the heart of the market, including a new American-made midsize sedan targeting the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion.

In fact, Volkswagen aims to refresh its entire lineup by 2011, and that product renaissance will reportedly entail a revised New Beetle and Jetta that are specifically tasked with catering to American automotive tastes. Also in the pipeline is a new seven-seat CUV that will go head-to-head with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Chevy Traverse, though a pickup apparently isn't in the cards. We're not sure where that leaves the automaker's subcompact Up!, but Jacoby did mention that smaller models are under consideration.

Of course, if VW is going to play on the same level as Toyota and the rest of the gang, quality is going to need to be up to snuff, and that's something Jacoby says the automaker is working to improve. The trick will be accomplishing all of these assorted goals while maintaining VW's status as a desirable nameplate among image-conscious buyers. "It's not our intention to make VW a boring brand," he says. Pretty ambitious plans... what could possibly go wrong?

And then Piech will want to conquer Moon as well, followed by Venus, Mars etc ... than Milky Way, ... and in the end the whole Universe. With all the parallel ones in his head as well. :D

Honestly, VW needs some better looking cars. All of it's competitors look way better.

And then there is VW Passat

They gotta get something sleek and creative going if they want to get some sales in. The Current Passat and Jetta don't look like anything right now. Even the Passat CLS type car sucks.

I couldn't agree with you less.

The Camry is a minger and so is the Maxima. The Passat looks quite classy, not the one you posted above, though.

When the Camry first came out, it had great road presence and looks way more sportier then previous model. I would take it in a heart beat over the Passat.

The Maxima is extraordinary, use to be known as the poor mans Benz to some. The car is has an adventurous design, which is far from boring. Then again everyone has their own opinion so to each his own.

Either way VW needs some attractive designs ASAP.

I quite like the Honda. From profile it looks like a 5-Series E60, which is a good thing IMO.

Well as they take over the world, I hope they don't lose sight of what makes them cool cars to begin with.

In my opinion, all of the cars, aside from maybe the Mazda, are boring. The Camry does look better than the previous generation but it still royally sucks imo.

I think the Passat CC is a very attractive car.

What plagues VW here is their lackluster reputation for reliability. Not to mention their shoddy customer service around the country. If they can improve these things I don't see why they can't have more presence on American roads.

Oh, and they need to bring over the Polo right now. Like, right now. Yesterday even.
