It seems like yesterday, but 4 years have already passed since the latest generation of VW Polo was launched, making it time for a facelift. With a name born in 1975 and almost 14 million examples sold throughout the years, the Polo won the "World car of the year" award back in 2010 and is now in need of a small push in order to remain competitive against the new generation of its competition. The 2014 Polo doesn't look much different from the 2013 model, as most changes concern the available engines, safety and infotainment equipment.

First of all, the redesigned bumper, headlights and larger lower air intake enhance the Polo's sporty profile, while the new chrome trim strip makes it appear wider. At the rear, the changes are restricted to a redesigned bumper, rear lights and a new position for the rear reflectors. On top of that, new rim design and exterior colours are available. Moving inside, the instruments and centre console are slightly redesigned for increased functionality and improved looks. The radio and navigation units are new as well, as is the optional MirrorLink™ feature that makes it possible to display and control the contents and functions shown on a smart phone on the touchscreen of the Polo infotainment system.

The most important updates are those under the hood. The refreshed engine list consists of four gasoline [44 kW / 60 PS (indirect injection / MPI), 55 kW / 75 PS (MPI), 66 kW / 90 PS (direct injection / TSI) and 81 kW / 110 PS (TSI)] and three diesel engines [55 kW / 75 PS, 66 kW / 90 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS]. The BlueGT version will follow shortly with 110 kW / 150 PS and cylinder deactivation technology and so will the new Polo GTI, with engine power boosted from 132 kW / 180 PS to 141 kW / 192 PS. The 75 PS Polo TDI BlueMotion is a pioneer in fuel economy as it requires only 3.2l of diesel per 100 km with absolutely no hybrid technology!

A new electro-mechanical steering system is replacing the old, hydraulic unit as the fashion demands these days. What is more interesting, is the electronically adjustable dampers, offered in the Polo for the first time, being the core technology of the new, optional Sport Select suspension. The "Sport" button activates an electro-mechanical switching valve in the dampers which, in few words, makes the ride stiffer. Adaptive Cruise Control makes also its appearance in the optional equipment list alongside a series of safety systems. The Front Assist ambient traffic monitoring system, that continually monitors the distance traffic moving ahead and can brake - if necessary - until standstill. Finally, LED lighting technology is also available.

The equipment levels are still three: "Trendline", "Comfortline" and "Highline" (other versions will follow such as the BlueGT, GTI, BlueMotion and Cross), but the standard equipment has grown for the facelifted model. Click more for our photo gallery and some quick facts about the Polo Facelift.
