The i3 marked the beginning of a new era for BMW, that's an undeniable fact. But it also marked the beginning of a new era for the whole automotive industry, as well, since it's the first car with a CFRP monocoque chassis and hybrid drivetrain to be produced in such large numbers. The i3's production takes place in two different continents, as the material and chassis are made in the US, at SGL's factory at Moses Lake, with the rest of the parts and the final assembly taking place in Germany, at BMW's factories of Wackersdorf, Landshut and Dingolfing.
After the jump, you can find four videos from TestDriven, which cover the whole production of the i3 quite extensively. It's a must-watch, but requires a about 80 minutes, yet it covers all aspects of the i3's production, from the carbon fibre material construction, battery, e-transmission and drive module assembly, the electric engine construction, the cockpit and dashboard molding, all the way to the body pressing and final assembly and painting.
