London - One gets the feeling that Ford Motor (nyse: F - news - people ) would be in a lot better shape if it stopped lending its luxury Aston Martin cars to the Broccoli family to trash in James Bond movies.

At any rate, the Detroit automaker may soon see a cash infusion of more than $1 billion by selling its high-end Aston Martin division to Simon Halabi, a secretive Syrian-born tycoon.

Halabi has reportedly emerged as a top bidder for the automaker. A British newspaper cited sources as saying that bidding for Aston Martin had been fierce and there was a good chance that it could sell for more than £600 million ($1.18 billion). It added that UBS, the financial adviser on the sale, had apparently whittled down a list of more than 30 parties who were sent information memoranda to just four contenders....
