The auto industry finally realized that fitting cars with a standardized upgradable infotainment systems is better for everyone. That’s how many automakers made the deal with Apple and Google for the CarPlay and Auto Link. Apart from those, it looks like Toyota has another project going on in Taiwan.

Maybe those two technologies won’t be available in the area, so Toyota decided to partner with ASUS in order to create the Toyota Intelligent System, or TIS, asa report from Eprice says.

Unlike the two internet giants’ mirroring systems, the TIS uses a somewhat standard unit with only a tiny calculator-like liquid crystal display for basic functions. The neat thing is that it comes with an NFC connection that allows you to connect a Nexus 7 tablet to the audio system.

The tablet will also be wirelessly charged so there’s no need of any cables. Once mated with the onboard system, the tablet will function like a very efficient infotainment system, allowing you to play music, navigate on the internet, use the GPS, access voice commands, find traffic reports and even make phone calls.

What’s the great advantage here? Well, the automaker only fits the car (in this case it’s a Toyota Vios) with a somewhat standard audio unit while letting the users transform it into a super infotainment system using their own tablet they can take with them.

Another great feature is the car will cost less and let’s not forget that you’ll always have a modern infotainment since you tend to replace your gadgets more often than your car.
