Looks like Toyota learned nothing from Honda's CRZ debacle.

As long as Toyota keeps mating a CVTs with its hybrid, I could care less about how many "R"s they put next to the hybrid.

exciting tech, but why do they put it inside such a boring body?

Because the engine used as the basis for this concept was developed for their Yaris rally car.

Based on the Yaris 3-door, the Yaris Hybrid-R concept hybrid powertrain combines the 1.6-liter Global Race Engine (GRE) developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) for rallying with two electric motors to provide an intelligent electric four-wheel drive capability.
In August 2012, TMG unveiled the entry-level TMG Yaris R1A car. TMG developed the TMG Yaris R1A specifically to provide an affordable entry into rallying. The FIA’s R1A regulations permitted only limited performance modifications to the standard 1.3-liter gasoline-engined, three-door Yaris.

I agree that it would have been nice to see it in a more exciting concept, but at least there is some link between this motor and the Yaris.
