Camry Toyota Camry Replaces Avensis In Europe

The Toyota Camry is an automobile sold internationally by Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

The Camry is returning to Western Europe after a 14-year absence.
The Toyota Camry is all set to make a spectacular return to the European roads – as a hybrid model. It’s been 14 years since we last saw the big Japanese sedan on the Old continent, and the introduction of the new Camry Hybrid means the demise of the Europe-only Avensis range, which has managed only disappointing sales.

The eight-generation Camry is already on sale worldwide, having made its official debut at the Detroit Мotor Show in January 2017. The European version will be tweaked specifically for the region, with revised handling and suspension.

The new Camry is based on the TNGA – Toyota New Global Architecture – platform, which also underpins the latest version of the Prius and the C-HR SUV. It will be powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired up with the carmaker’s now-familiar hybrid electric system.

Toyota says that the aim with the TNGA setup was to make its cars more fun to drive. The arrival of the hybrid Camry will mean that Toyota has an expansive range of eight different hybrid vehicles on offer in Europe, starting with the Yaris supermini and moving on up to the RAV4 SUV.

I don't think a name change will make the Avensis more successful in the UK.

This is not the US where small sedans are popular entry level or cheap cars. Even the CLA and A3 sedan are outnumbered by their hatchback counterparts. The same is true for the Jetta.

Premium hatchbacks are simply too good, small crossovers are irresistible and the A4/C/3 are aggressively discounted.

IMO the Avensis/Camry is in no man's land in the UK.

The only version that made Avensis popular in Scandinavia was the wagon version. I guess this means Auris wagon will be replacing it over here.

The Avensis was always in the top 10 in Norway, sometimes even top 3 best selling car. Without a wagon this car will tank as an Avensis replacement.

The affordable D-Segment cars are dead, and those few that still go for the traditional sedan will shop something like the inoffensive Octavia.

Very few non-luxury brands offer models like that anymore - it's a dying breed. I doubt we'll see another Laguna, and the 508 has grown much much larger in order to survive. It's SAV or nothing these days!

There's no Laguna sedan in the UK and VW pulled the Jetta out of the UK market last year. Skoda Octavia flourishes because of the hatchback as well as unbeatable tech and refinement for the price. Furthermore the VRS Estate is a hot looking car.

China is the remaining heaven for sedans. Below the Passat VW have 8 different compact sedans plus LWB versions of one or two!

It's not just China it's also Russia, Ukraine, pretty all the former CIS states, and places which are really cold, a large back opening lets in the cold, more than in a sedan.

Also if you have to transport a dead body in the car, the sedan is a better solution, because it keeps the smell away from the passengers. A friend of mine said that he would never buy a hatchback, because he was jogging a lot and didn't want the smell of his sneakers in the trunk to be felt in the car.
