Camry Toyota admits Camry V6 flaw, reacts to Consumer Reports survey

The Toyota Camry is an automobile sold internationally by Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

Toyota admits Camry V6 flaw, reacts to Consumer Reports survey

Despite being knocked from the top spot in Consumer Reports' reliability survey, Toyota executives are pleased with the results. Overall, Toyota still placed first in 6 out of 8 reliability categories and represented 44% of the magazines most recommended vehicles.

However, Toyota's top brass was concerned that three of its vehicles were moved to the "not recommended" category — the Camry V6, Tundra V8 and Lexus GS AWD. “The bad news from our perspective is we never want to see vehicles on the ‘not recommend’ list,” Jim Lentz, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. told Automotive News.

Lentz said he was not surprised that the Camry V6 was on the list as it had a transmission flaw that Toyota was aware of.

“We knew in the very beginning we had a transmission issue with that vehicle,” he said. The problem caused the transmission to get stuck in second gear or pass through second gear roughly. However, Lentz doesn't feel the flaw will impact Toyota's reputation for quality. “I don’t think it’s going to have a long-term impact on the overall view of Toyota as a reliable product,” Lentz said.

Lentz had no explanation for the other two vehicles making the "not recommended" list.

It really looks like rapid expansion is taking its toll on Toyota!

Others should learn from this (hint to BMW!).

They need to look at honda. They have expanded (not as much as toyota) but they have expanded without issues. Hell their new baby (ridgeline) won truck of the year the year it was introduced. That is no small feat.

Regarding the Lexus GS, aside from reliability, there was really nothing that distinguished it from its competitors. The GS offered some of the smallest trunk and interior space in the class, wasn't as sporty as their German and fellow Japanese rivals (which is not so important) and it wasn't even that comfortable compared to say the E-Class (from what I've read). I don't think the GS has even won a comparison against the car it competes against. I guess that does tell us something about this car. Even if it was super reliable, I wouldn't recommend it based on the small interior space. :usa7uh:

I also think Toyota is feeling the pressure of being the world's number one. They have a quality reputation to upkeep. No doubt accidents (like this) can happen, but I am sure they'll figure out the problem. ;)

Toyota is really starting to dissapoint me, and that's saying something considering they rarely have in the past.
