5 Series Top gear video - BMW 535d

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.
Fluffy kittens! :D

Great car, it quite amazed me how much quieter it is in comparison to the petrol V8. It's like 4 dB difference at 70 mph which is like almost more than 2 times quieter than the petrol V8.

Crap, BMW should stop this quieting of its engines.
It's destroying its "Ultimate Driving Machine" motto.

This is probably most clever decision from me in my life concerning car.

4db doesn't equal to twice as quiet I don't think...

I think that they should have compared it to the 530i, it only would have made sense if they wanted to compare the equivalent. If not that, then the 540i. If I was able to purchase either the 530i or 535d, I think I'd have to toss a coin.

Correct but I said it was more than twice as quieter.
I see I made a slight mistake in my previous post....hehe.
The sentence "which is like almost more than 2 times quieter than the petrol V8" should be "which is more than 2 times quieter than the petrol V8."

Ahum.... anyway if a car produces 3dB less, then that would mean that the car is twice as quiet. And if a car produces 6dB less noise, that would mean that the car is four times as quiet.
But that's objectively speaking of course.
These numbers don't tell everything about the reallife experience. I've seen some test where cars had lower dB rating but was subjectively louder than the ones which was measured with a higher dB rating.

I think the comparison is fair - on price they are the closest in the range.

Which episode was this video taken from please?

I have absolutely no idea, but it's probably not that recent because it said that the video was added 142 days ago.

Yes, the 550i is a betetr car than the 535d.

IMO, much better.

The prices from BMW.de:
535d: E50,400
540i: E51,700
550i: E59,900

So maybe comparing the 550i (which used to be the 545i) is not exactly fair. If I had the choice, I'd go for the 550i... but if you compare it to the 540i, I would almost sure that'd I'd rather go for the 535d. Two totally different beasts.

No the video is old - about a year old. Therefore the comparison is between the old 545i and the 535d - not fair IMO.

Actually you are right... the 550i just came out.

Still, my decision stands. 535d over 540i.

If i am to buy a new 5, i will for sure go for the 535d at a place where there is none or reasonable surcharge on diesel... It looks like such a great engine and very importantly, it sounds no inferior to petrols!
