X5 The new BMW X5 follows the trend, getting an electric motor and an eDrive badge

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

For BMW it's an undeniable fact that the future is electric. Or partly electric, if we focus on BMW's constantly growing eDrive line-up of models, all being equipped with a highly efficient gasoline or diesel engine coupled with an electric motor, while offering high-end luxury features, combined with unparalleled design and style. The brand's latest "victim" of the latest electrification and fuel efficient-ization (if we may) trend is the recently introduced X5.

For this very reason, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive's hybrid system consists of a four-cylinder combustion engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a 70 kW/95 electric motor, that sources its energy from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, sufficient enough for traveling 30 kilometres (19 miles) on electric power alone. In numbers, the average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions under 90 grams per kilometre.

The X5 eDrive Concept is scheduled to debut next month 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA), in order to point out the next step in achieving a highly efficient SAV, designed to be a plug-in vehicle, the high-voltage battery of which can be recharged from any domestic power socket, a Wallbox designed to offer stronger currents or a public charging station.

BMW Concept X5 eDrive: a pioneering combination offering supremely efficient driving pleasure.

The further refined BMW Concept X5 eDrive being exhibited at the New York Auto Show demonstrates the lengths that BMW is going to in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment. The 180 kW/245 hp four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology works in unison with a 70 kW/95 hp electric motor to enable the concept study to drive purely on electric power at speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) with a maximum range of 30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles).

The electric motor draws its power from a lithium-ion battery that can be charged from any domestic socket. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid drive concept, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive returns a highly impressive average fuel consumption of just 3.8 l/100 km (74.3 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle. The electrification of the powertrain under the umbrella of BMW eDrive enables BMW to unlock huge potential for reducing the fuel consumption and emissions of large models.

The concept study has undergone a series of detailed refinements in preparation for its appearance at the New York International Auto Show and is equipped with a drive system comprising a 180 kW/245 hp four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a 70 kW/95 hp electric motor. The motor is supplied with power from a lithium-ion battery that can be charged from any domestic socket and has sufficient capacity to enable all-electric driving with zero local emissions for a range of up to 30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles). To ensure a particularly high level of crash safety, the high-voltage battery developed for the BMW Concept X5 eDrive has been housed underneath the luggage compartment, whose load capacity remains virtually unchanged as a result.

Various drive system and driving modes are available to suit requirements and the situation in hand. The familiar COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO modes can be selected with the Driving Experience Control switch, allowing the intelligent hybrid drive system to be fine-tuned to produce the desired balance between sportiness and efficiency. What’s more, two further drive system modes can be activated at the push of a button as an alternative to the AUTO eDrive setting: MAX eDrive for driving solely on electric power in city traffic and SAVE Battery for maintaining the current battery charge.

I'm curious as to why all these company use a petrol engine to power their hybrids instead of an even more economical diesel? The only diesel hybrid that springs to mind is Volvo.

In Holland there is less tax on diesel fuel but a higher road tax on diesel powered cars, which is based on the weight of the car, therefore encouraging people to drive diesel cars only if they do a lot of km. If this is the same in more countries then it would make more sense for it to be powered by a petrol engine.

BMW X5 eDrive Hybrid might be the ultimate SUV

BMW’s third-generation, F15 X5 is already a fan favorite among BMW enthusiasts for its good looks, both inside and out, agile handling for such a big car and smooth, powerful engines. It’s easily the best X5 to date.

Recently, BMW took the wrapping off of the X5 M and that it’s rumored to be an impressive track monster, as well as being comfortable and spacious. To counteract the hellacious M version, there’s a nice diesel option which has loads of torque but gets excellent fuel economy. However, despite the many flavors of the X5, BMW seems to want to add one more, and it might be the best one yet.

BMW will be releasing this year a plug-in hybrid, eDrive version of its beloved X5. This isn’t news, however. We’ve known that BMW was making a plug-in hybrid X5 for over a year now. But I think it could not only be the best X5 but one of the best SUVs on the road.

The eDrive X5 will use BMW’s 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 240 hp, mated to an 8-Speed, ZF automatic and using a rumored 100 hp electric motor as a torque converter. The battery pack will be in the back of the car with a plug-in charge point located on the front left fender. Combined power output is said to be around 300 hp with the electric motor filling in for turbo lag, as on the i8.

So while the electrified X5 might not be the fastest SUV on the block, it will definitely have a nice punch. Not that anyone would really need to know 0-60 times on a plug-in hybrid SUV, but the X5 eDrive should do it under 7 seconds.

The X5 eDrive will have three driving modes, Intelligent Hybrid, Pure Electric and Save Battery. BMW claims that the Save Battery mode will be most utilized but it’s the Pure Electric is the important one to most folks. Capable of driving 20 miles on electrons alone, the eDrive will be the perfect around-towner. It can also hit up to 75 mph in Pure Electric mode. Save Battery mode will restrict the use of battery power to save it, but will allow a reserve of power to complete a trip if need be.

The plug-in hybrid variant of the X5 won’t be some canyon carving monster, as the electric motor and batteries add about 500 lbs, but it should still handle like an X5, which is to say, good. However, what the eDrive version lacks in handling, it makes up for in low-end torque from the electric motors, far better fuel economy and the quiet, serene electric driving experience. BMW hinted in the past that the average consumption will be between 3 and 4 liters per 100 km (59-74 MPG).

Let’s face it, the X5, despite handling well for an SUV, still isn’t a sports car. It’s meant to be a luxury SUV that can still handle well enough, which the eDrive version still does very well. However, it has the added benefit of that electric motor punch and pure electric driving.

The X5 eDrive might be the best X5 yet, and maybe even the best car in the segment.
