Individuality is an important factor of premium. That's a well known fact in Stuttgart, so the S-Class has a rich history of individualization options. That was highly important, when the mass production on assembly lines started being standard practice, with many car manufacturers also individually built vehicles with a high degree of customization alongside the mass produced vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (W 100) represents a cornerstone in the history of individualization for cars. Apart from the 6.3-litre V8 engine, the pneumatic suspension, the automatic suspension and power steering, a unique luxury hydraulic system was offered. This hydraulic system permitted the adjustment of the front seats and rear seat bench, opening and closing of car doors, boot lid and the optionally available sunroof, as well as opening and closing of side windows. Combined with an extensive variety of leather upholstery, fabrics, woods, and interior trim as well as a shocking number of possible rear configurations, they gave the 600 a unique place in the automotive hall of fame.

Much later, Mercedes-Benz introduced the "Sportline" in 1989, a new approach to the individualisation of large-volume vehicles, in the form of optional sport tyres with alloy wheels, firmer and lower suspension set-up, more direct steering and sport seats. In 1992 the "Avantgarde" line was introduced, created by a team of international Mercedes-Benz designers The next step was taken in 1995, at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, with the launch of designo, a "comprehensive individualization programme specifically aligned to the needs of the most demanding of Mercedes-Benz customers."

Still, the best part of MB's individualization possibilities came with the, launched in 2002, Maybach 57 and 62. Nowadays, the recently introduced S-Class sets new standards in individualization. For example, the W 222 S-Class has been equipped with an innovative Active Perfuming System, which allows the driver to select a discrete fragrance for an olfactory experience that appears almost imperceptibly before quickly receding into the background.
