The BMW X4 is the X6 of the medium sized SAV segment
If the shape of the BMW X6 can be called a revolution in SAV styling, then the all new X4 is revolution in 3/4 scaling. BMW is expanding the niche of the so called "Sports Activity Coupe" in the X3 size segment, with their latest X-model. At 4,680 mm in length, the X4 is only 14 mm longer than the X3, while the shape and slope of the roof from the B-Pillar and backwards, create a very sporty and dramatic profile, totally opposed to the utilitarian characteristics of the average SUV. The X4 is a medium sized SAV for those that want a command driving position and increased ground clearance, alongside the illusion of a proper sportscar (as the slope of the roof suggests).
Even though the mechanical underpinnings of the X3 and X4 are identical, BMW assure as that the two models will drive differently, as to further emphasize the difference of the character of the two. In any cases, the X4 will be offered with the same extensive engine line-up, as the X3. The flagship petrol unit in the BMW X4 xDrive35i develops 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). Its diesel counterpart, the BMW X4 xDrive35d generates 230 kW/313 hp and peak torque of 630 Nm (465 lb-ft). As far as four-cylinder engines are concerned, the new-generation 2.0-litre diesel engine in the BMW X4 xDrive20d produces 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), while the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powering the BMW X4 xDrive28i is rated at 180 kW/ 240 hp and a peak torque of 260 lb-ft (350 Nm). The X4 is offered either with a six-speed manual gearbox, or the brilliant eight-speed automatic gearbox from ZF and standard all wheel drive. US-bound allocations, though, will not be offered with a clutch pedal.
The new X4 will be packed with technology, as an Auto Start Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration system are standard, while Head-Up Display, the anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, and Driving Assistant Plus including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, preventive pedestrian protection and a Collision Warning system can be found in the optional equipment list. Production at the US Spartanburg plant and sales will begin shortly after the X4's first public debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show.
