The best car you've ever owned

The Golf 2 GTi 8 valve is probably the best car I owned from a driving point of view as it just was so fun to drive and touched all the senses. As a family car with good alround abilities and reliability the Volvo S60 T5 is a great car as well as the VW CC. For economy and also all round driving ability the E90 320d was a fantastic car but was let down by some build quality issues and also long term reliability.

Yes, I've also owned two Golf IIs'. Both second car, second hand beaters, the first was an utterly rudimentary 1984 Golf C 1.3 with 55 PS. Dependable because it was so simple and "strippo" that little could go wrong with it. Its' sole option was the most basic VW radio. The second Golf II was a bit more fun: a rare 1990 1.6 TD LLK (intercooler) with 80PS. It was quite frisky as well as economical and pretty much trouble free. Had a few options too (manual sunroof, somewhat higher grade radio/cassette player, metallic paint).

Following the IIs', I owned a 1996 Golf III 1.9 TDI Special . Very cool second car, nicely equipped with BBS-style alloys and a good amount of "GTI" trim. Including those cool plaid-fabric GTI sport seats.

Clearly an upward trend…

How is the E39 going? Have you gotten accustomed to the naturally aspirated power curve yet?
The E39 is doing fine. It races my girlfriend in who's more expensive to maintain, the girl or the car.

As for the N/A power curve, on proper roads its heavens. I took it to a 4 day trip up some mountains and it was pure joy. On congested highways, where you just want to overtake a bus or something equally long, it's a ball-buster. Then and only then do I miss the boost.

Other than that, after many long years of daily (or just frequent) usage of the S60, it's been three weeks since the last time I used it. I don't miss it enough yet. Mind you that it's a car that under-promised and over-delivered!

Pleased to hear it's going well! At least it's a close run thing on whether the car is more expensive, or the girlfriend... for me it was never close :D :D I have had to become single to cover the Si!

Hands down it was my 2003 CLK430 Cabrio:

After 6 wonderful years I sold it and I have regretted every since.

The night I sold it. I was taking one last look from across the street before I drove off.

Wow ! A C/A 208 !

Those have long become rare here in Germany. Drab, wet and cold northern European winters were certainly not this cars' friend (notorious rust problems). A shame, as the first CLK generation was-and remains-a handsome, mechanically very competent automobile.
