Origins of the BMW-relevant Anglo-German automobile connection can be traced back to the late 1920s'. During that time, the Austin 7 was produced under licence by the Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach and later upon takeover , BMW under the brandname "Dixi" as the "Dixi 3/15".

The 1929 Dixi 3/15 "Sonnenschein" 2 door sedan:

Fast forward following WWII, British aviation manufacturer Bristol endeavored to enter the postwar automobile market with a line of cars more commonly known as the "400 series" (400 through 403). They were automobiles closely based on the prewar BMW 2L il6 cylinder 326/327/328 models, mechanically as well as in terms of design, featuring many styling elements of the mid-late 1930s' Peter Schimanowski-penned BMW cars. Interesting cars positioned in the more elevated motoring segments of the time.

The postwar Bristol 400s' also provided the foundation for a number of limited production design exercises by various Italian coachbuilders.

In a sense, Bristol was a good example of cooperation between European nations.
