Not so long ago, the definition of a hot-hatch involved the words "front wheel drive". That was until the first generation of BMW's 1 series, that redefined the definition by adding the RWD option. Now the hot-hatch segment feels too crowded, but there are offerings for everybody's preferences. There are four German cars in a segment traditionally dominated by French and Italian vehicles. This time, Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe compares MB's latest gem, the A45 AMG against the segment role model, the Golf GTi and the BMW M135i.
Price wise, the GTi is cheaper than the A45 AMG by a third of its price, while the M135i is 7000 GBP cheaper in its basic spec. But is the A45 worth the, undeniably, too much extra money? Using Sutcliffe's words, the A45 is the unquestionable winner, not only because of its straight line performance, but also because of the wonderful engine, the superb handling, even better than the Bimmer's steering feel and great seats. Would the A45 be his choice? Yes, if money was not an issue, yet if it was, Mr. Sutcliffe would be buying a GTi.
If you want to know why, you better hear the man himself, by clicking "more" and watching the video.
