Our sources spotted the production version of Volkswagen's XL1 during cold weather testing today and they are happy to show us some new photos of the 235-mpg car. The fact that it was freezing (-30° C) didn’t stop them nor Volkswagen to do their work, but we suspect that the driver wasn’t freezing as much as they did!

The XL1 will be powered by two engines. One is a small two cylinder turbo diesel injection engine delivering some 50 hp and the other is a 30 hp strong electric motor. Both engines are delivering the power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed DSG transmission.

Open the gullwing doors and you will find an interior looking a lot like the one known from the concept car. You will also notice the very narrow rear track with the wheels sitting far inside the body. Expect the wheels to be covered by full wheel covers to help the aerodynamics when the XL1 hits the market later this year.
