Infiniti QX30 Spied For the First Time, Will Enter Production in 2015

When Infiniti presented the world with the Q30 Concept compact hatchback, many of us gearheads were like “LOL, that looks like a tarted up Nissan Pulsar, yo!” Then followed the Infiniti QX30 Concept compact crossover SUV and we were under the impression this is a sort of déjà vu, albeit with a jacked-up ride height in the posh vehicle’s defense.

But Nissan’s luxury division wanted to introduce a C-segment hatchback and crossover for a long number of years now and we’re happy to announce the green light has been given for both of them. Earlier this year, Nissan informed the motoring media that it’s going to invest and adapt its Sunderland plant to assemble the Infiniti Q30 starting from mid-2015.

Yup, you heard that right. Infiniti vehicles made in Her Majesty’s United Kingdom. That’s how globalization works, folks! Furthermore, we’ve learned the QX30 will also be built there, with production slated for fall 2015. Hip hip hooray! It’s not like there weren't a lot of premium crossovers around...

Still, Infiniti may know something we don’t

We suppose that’s the popularity the QX30’s niche is enjoying nowadays. Think about it for a moment - if the Mercedes-Benz GLA is around, why wouldn’t Infiniti try to capitalize on its share of the segment’s pie? Simple as that! The 2015 Infiniti QX30 is still a big mystery at the present moment, with the shots below being the first ever of it. Nevertheless, it’s as clear as day what's going on underneath that camo.

Expected to boast with a 2,700-mm (106.3-inch) wheelbase, the longest in the segment, the QX30 is also going to be a pretty fancy-schmancy machine in terms of cabin comfort and gadgets. You won’t see the six-speed manual of the Pulsar offered as standard, but the revised, smooth-shifting Xtronic CVT box.

We’re not sure if the Renault-sourced 1.5 dCi turbo diesel will be offered, but the 1.6 DIG-T turbo petrol with 190 horsepower on tap certainly will. But wouldn’t it be more fab if the performance-oriented model would boast with the newly-developed 1.8-liter turbo mill expected to churn out 266 ponies?

Infiniti will use the QX30 to launch itself into the premium compact SUV market

These are the first pictures of the Infiniti QX30, a model that will pitch Nissan’s upmarket brand into the highly competitive compact premium SUV market.

The sister car to the upcoming Q30 hatchback, the QX30 is based on the same platform and will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland facility.

The two models use a tweaked version of the front-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz A/B-class platform. They are expected to use Infiniti-tuned versions of Mercedes’ four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. A Haldex-based all-wheel drive system will be optional.

The QX30 will be competing with BMW’s X1 and Audi’s recently refreshed Q3 in a sector that continues to be one of the fastest growing in the automotive world.

Explaining why Infiniti needed to get a foothold in the premium compact car market, the firm’s head of sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa, François Goupil de Bouillé, said: “Fifty per cent of premium car sales in the EU were in the C-segment… which means targeting the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series and so on. The [European premium] market is not an open door, so we have to offer something different.”

Goupil de Bouillé said the Q30 and QX30 will also be exported to North America. “We expect to sell around 60,000 of the two models in the first full year, with 30,000 sold in Europe,” he said.

He also said that Infiniti is expecting to sell about 200,000 cars globally this year. That would be some 15 per cent higher than last year, making it the third consecutive year of growth for Nissan’s top-end brand.

Meanwhile, Infiniti has opened its new factory in China. The facility in Xiangyang, Hubei province, is a joint venture between Dongfeng Motor Corp and Nissan. It has a capacity of 250,000 vehicles per year, of which 60,000 will be allocated for Infiniti production.

The first Infiniti off the line at Xiangyang was the Q50L saloon. This has been stretched by 68mm to an overall length of 4852mm. The plant will also be building a stretched version of the QX50 SUV.

China could be an increasingly important market for Infiniti, with sales in the first nine months of the year up by 91 per cent to 20,800 vehicles.

Infiniti QX30 Concept’s interior leaks out ahead of Geneva show premiere

To be realised as a premium crossover.

The Infiniti QX30 will be formally unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show on March 3, but the first image of car’s interior has been published on Chinese auto portal AutoHome. The image is featured in the video presentation screened behind the parked car on the stage.

Comparing the QX30’s interior to the Q30 Concept’s, we are not able to spot any differences. The Q30 was showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013, and the QX30 is essentially the cross-version of the hatchback.

At 30 mm taller than the Infiniti Q30, the QX30 Concept sits on 21-inch wheels and has a very interesting use of curved and concave/convex surface, which the brand terms as the ‘dual wave’ effect.

Images released by the company show skid plates at the front and the rear, dual trapezoidal exhaust tips, glass roof and sleek roof racks. Previous media reports say that the QX30, much like the Q30, is based on Mercedes’ MFA (Mercedes Benz Front-wheel drive Architecture) platform that underpins the A, B, CLA, and GLA Class.

Work continues on the 2016 Infiniti QX30 as our spies have snapped new pictures of the entry-level crossover.

Recently previewed by the QX30 concept, the production model has a familiar design but adopts a modified front fascia, revised headlights and larger mirrors. We can also see distinctive side skirts, roof rails and a dual exhaust system.

As we have previously reported, the QX30 be based on the Mercedes MFA platform and go on sale sometime next year. Infiniti has been coy on specifications but has previously confirmed the model will be offered with a variety of petrol and diesel engines which will be backed up by an all-wheel drive system.

Infiniti Announces QX30 Line-up in the Americas

Infiniti QX30 Premium Crossover set to go on sale in mid-2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Infiniti today announced the line-up of its all-new QX30 premium active crossover for the United States and Canada.

While sharing basic exterior and interior designs, the QX30 line will be offered in three unique versions, each with its own front and rear fascia, wheel design and interior themes:

QX30: The crossover’s highly sculpted exterior, unique stance and asymmetric cabin design exemplify Infiniti’s design-led approach to product development. This version is sold in Europe and other regions outside of the Americas under the Q30 name. In the Americas, this model will be front-wheel drive.
QX30S: With a lower stance, aggressive front and rear fascia, cross-drilled front brake rotors, 19-inch wheels and performance tires, the QX30S is the sports version of Infiniti’s new premium compact line. It was shown at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show and is sold in other markets as the Q30S.
QX30 AWD: With an intelligent all-wheel drive system, slightly higher ride height and off-road inspired front and rear valence panels, the vehicle is able to take on urban, suburban and winding rural roads in all driving conditions. The QX30 AWD debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show as the QX30.

The QX30 line for the U.S. and Canada is powered by a 208-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, and it is scheduled to go on sale at Infiniti retailers in the United States and Canada in mid-2016 and in Mexico and Latin America in the second half of 2016.

2017 Infiniti QX30 crossover starts at $29,950
Mercedes GLA's alter ego is cheaper than the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
With prices kicking off at $29,950 for the entry-level trim, it means Infiniti’s version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA is actually cheaper than its donor which you can have for at least $32,850. At the same time, it’s also more affordable than the $33,700 Audi Q3 and the $33,100 BMW X1, with all prices excluding destination and handling fees.

Personally, I find it better-looking than Mercedes’ version, and since it’s also almost $3,000 cheaper, a decision regarding which one to pick is pretty much a no-brainer. Regardless of the trim (standard, Luxury, Premium, Sport) you select, all versions of the QX30 come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 208 horsepower (155 kilowatts) and 258 pound-feet (349 newton-meters) of torque.

The 2017 Infiniti QX30 is being offered exclusively with a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic transmission sending power as standard to the front wheels. If you want an all-wheel-drive layout, prepare to fork out $34,400 for the Luxury AWD or $37,700 if you upgrade to the Premium AWD trim.

Go for the Sport model which is the most expensive of them all at $38,500, and the crossover gets different front and rear lower fascias, dark chrome exhaust finishers, glossy black grille, 19-inch Gun Metallic alloys, and body-colored side sill panels. This particular version also sits a tad lower than the regular FWD versions of the QX30 to add a bit of sportiness.

The Luxury and Premium versions in AWD guise also have their own front and rear lower fascias, along with roof rails, extended overfenders, different black mold-in color side sills, an increased ride height, and bespoke 18-inch rims.

Infiniti USA says the “premium active crossover” will start hitting dealers next month. Meanwhile, you can read our First Drive and find out why we consider it as being “one of the most well-rounded entry-luxury crossovers around.”
