Look people, do we have to get in the M5 vs. Gallardo vs. F430 again, we all know that on tracks like H-heim thee'll win, but on roads the M5 will equall and/or best them.
M5 is one, highly impresive car.

Well, as usual, the E60 M5 does not disappoint.
It does not rely on the reputation of its predecessor, it blazes it's own path to success.
Some impressive figures, but not entierly suprising considering we know what ///M is capable of.
I'm quite impressed by the B5, ... Alpina really have done a great job with this car..!! :eusa_clap
E55? ... well, it can be excused here due to its age. Wonder why the CLS55 wasn't used here though? :t-hands:

What I found interesting was the laptimes of the R32 and the 130i.
A bit suprised the R32 had a faster laptime, eventhough it is only a marginal difference.
I'm guessing this is because the R32 was actually tested and developed by Volkswagen, whereas the 130i just had the bigger engine put in it and maybe a bit of a sportier ride, but no real fine tuning of the chassis balance and so forth that is needed on a track like Hockenheim. ...am I right ?

Yeah it not that suprising that the M5 is faster than the Gallardo in a straigt line. There is nothing more important in straight line races than a fast gear boxe and a powerfull engine. With the M5 having a 507hp V10 engine and a SMG gearbox it is likely that it will win against many sports cars in a drag race.

BTW did sportauto use the launch control when they did these tests?

I read a test where the Gallardo was faster than the new M5 so its hardly a rule that the M5 is always a faster car.

not that the difference was huge but the Gallardo was slightly faster. But neither of them had an impressive time.

M5 / Gallardo

0-90mph 8.7 s / 8.6 s
0-120mph 14.1 s / 14.0 s
0-160mph 27.6 s / 26.7 s

May I ask you a question? They say that there is a manual version comming of the new M5. Is it gonna be faster than the one with SMG???

No one knows but after yesterday I have a heard time to see that.

One more very important reason why the M5 is about as fast as the Gallardo to whatever speed, despite more weight - it has 7 gears. And that's not even getting into the actual gear ratios. The SMG aspect only counts for so much, IMO.

That said, I highly doubt that a manual version of the M5 will be faster than the SMG version, even if they decide to make a conventional 7-speed. Three-pedal manuals may be loved by journalists, purists and dare I say fanboys all over the world, but their advantages do not include faster shifting or better lap times.

I'm not sure about the R32 vs. 130i. Wasn't there another thread about them? I don't think BMW would have 'just dropped the engine in' any more than VW did. I don't know what it is, otherwise. It could be the 4WD system, but there's still no hiding the fact that the R32 is faster around that particular track.

And the E55 should be much better if it gets either the 6.3L V8, the 7G-Tronic (especially if it's an AMG-reworked version), or both. Yes, it's pretty old to say "when X comes, you'll see!", but it shouldn't be that far off and it's not entirely unlikely. Two transmission gears count for a lot, even if it will be still a true torque convertor automatic transmission.

I thought the E55 did 0-60 in 4.2. I though with all that torque the E55 is faster at lower speeds...
